5.0 out of 5 stars The revelatory C.P.E.Bach, 16 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Bach: Wurttemberg Sonatas [Mahan Esfahani] [Hyperion: CDA67995] (Audio CD)
These remarkable sonatas which usher in C.P.E. Bach's new musical language were written when Papa J.S. was still to create his important late works.the first sonata on the disc is fiery, brilliant and turbulent, whereas in contrast the second deals in the interplay of timbre and Affekt and displays the composer,s gift for imitating the human voice via the harpsichord. These sonatas are the work of a talented young composer 'seeking his voice'; anticipating new developments in music while benefiting from the solid grounding received from his father.
The playing of Mahan Ispahani is quite brilliant, and serve this delicious music excellently.

I recommend this disc highly:it will delight and not disappoint!

5.0 out of 5 stars CPE BACH Wurttemberg Sonatas, 14 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Bach: Wurttemberg Sonatas [Mahan Esfahani] [Hyperion: CDA67995] (Audio CD)
CPE Bach published this set of sonatas in 1744 just a couple of years after his so called Prussian sonatas and already a change of style can be detected. In the Wurttemberg sonatas a more restless or sturm und drang manner is audible and it's clear that CPE was focussed towards a more individual style of composition to set himself apart from his contemporaries. The Wurttemberg sonatas are unpredictable but highly imaginative music that show the 30 year old Bach already well on his way to establishing his own identity.

It reqiures a true keyboard master to perform this music as well as a special understanding of how to interpret the score so hats off to Mahan Esfahani in this, his debut cd recording. His performance is superb as he negotiates CPE Bach's complex rhythem's with ablomb and his replica Mietke harpsichord is extremely well captured by the sound engineers.

What a terrific disc this is and anybody interested in the gifts of CPE Bach as well as simply great harpsichord playing should acquire a copy without hesitation. This release introduces Mahan Esfahani onto the worlds stage and displays what an incredibly talanted harpsichordist he already is.
