5.0 out of 5 stars Good recording
Sarasate is a loved composer by many a violinist. His music showcases both artistic and technical proficiency and excellence. As show pieces and encores they are particularly popular. His music is easy to listen to but also impressive.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sadly insipid and awkwardly uninspiring
I'm a massive fan and I totally love her stuff and ... while this is technically superb Fischer (as always) ... it is just simply an uninspiring choice of music. It bobs along and goes nowhere special. It doesn't lift you to the heights and fill your heart with passion which is what you want from a virtuoso performance. Well, I do. I want her playing to bring tears to my...

Sarasate is a loved composer by many a violinist. His music showcases both artistic and technical proficiency and excellence. As show pieces and encores they are particularly popular. His music is easy to listen to but also impressive.

I've always thought of Julia Fischer in terms of her recordings of Bach which are outstanding. She plays Sarasate in a way that is perhaps unusual - she doesn't sound like she is out to sound like the flashiest player around - instead she plays with such ease that she almost makes it sound easy (which it is not!). She plays with true style. It really works on this recording. Milana Chernyavskaya provides great accompaniment and the two work well together.

Recommended.

It bobs along and goes nowhere special. It doesn't lift you to the heights and fill your heart with passion which is what you want from a virtuoso performance. Well, I do. I want her playing to bring tears to my eyes every time I hear it, not leave me thinking ... um, oh well, next ... She is so much better than this and it really was not a worthy choice to showcase her sublime and immense talents.

A few years ago, you couldn't buy a classical cd magazine without finding an advertisement for Julia Fischer playing the Bach sonatas and partitas on the back page. Goodness knows how many copies of these discs Pentatone had to sell to afford this media coverage but it must have been a lot! Intrigued, I did buy them and was ever so slightly disappointed by them. Her playing was fantastic but there was, to my ears, an ever so slightly disengaged quality to the Music making.

Well, that impression does NOT apply here! This is a cd to make anyone smile. The virtuosity on display here is breathtaking and it sounds as if the musicians were actually having FUN playing this repertoire. Perhaps there isn't quite the wink of the eye that Itzhak Perlman brings to this music it there is a smile in the sound and approach that is appealing.

Highlights? Well, all of it really and although 'Zigeunerweisen' is a work that I'd cheerfully never hear again this performance almost makes it sound new. Sarasate wrote many little compositions so, hopefully, this will be volume one.

Get it!

For me what added enormous pleasure in listening to this disk was not only the brilliance of Julie Fischer it was the outstanding quality of the recording, it was as though she was in the room.
