5.0 out of 5 stars A Sonic tour-de-force, 1 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mussorgsky: Pictures At An Exhibition [Peter Breiner, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra] [Naxos Blu-ray Audio: NBD0036] [DVD AUDIO] (Blu-ray Audio)
Having enjoyed the CD version of these performances, I jumped at the thought of having a Hi-Res version of 'Pictures' and I was not disappointed with the extra sonics of this format. Although not the Ravel transcription we have become used too. Peter Breiner has produced one that can join the top of the list of alternative orchestrations in the catalogue with this fine orchestra. If you have the Audio facilities, buy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars very different, 11 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Mussorgsky: Pictures At An Exhibition [Peter Breiner, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra] [Naxos Blu-ray Audio: NBD0036] [DVD AUDIO] (Blu-ray Audio)
Breiner's orchestration here is very different to anything I have heard before (I am thinking of Ravel, Rimsky-Korsakov and Ashkenazy, as well as the original piano score). That is a good thing on the whole, because it is like hearing the whole thing afresh, even if Ravel's version is perhaps still the one I prefer. There is always room for more and this one is not just different but thoughtful and effective.

Sound quality and performance are good. I listened in stereo on a big high-end Meridian system and it certainly has a wide dynamic range. Make sure the neighbours are out before cranking up the volume for the Hut of Baba Yaga or the Great Gate of Kiev. But the sound still struck me a bit veiled at times.

A good bargain at this price.
