This review is from: The Rumbling Guitar Sound Of Link Wray (Audio CD)
Certain musical experiences are seared into our memory. For me hearing Link Wray for the first time was one such. No, it was'nt Rumble. And it was'nt in his commercial heyday back in the 50s. Neither was it at his rebirth via Pulp Fiction. The track was Black Widow and it was in the punk heyday of the late 70s. Browsing the racks of a long-gone second hand record shop I was assailed by an all out aural attack of the most venomous kind. It was dirrrty, it was deranged, and it was totally brilliant! Amazingly, given that it had been recorded almost 20 years earlier, the track fitted perfectly with punk, speed-metal and stoner-rock tracks that had dominated the in-store playlist to that point. I was hooked instantly, and from that moment Frederick Lincoln Ray had a new life-long fan.

If you know little or nothing about Link Wray this CD is a great place to start. And if you are a casual fan who wants to explore his work in a little more depth, this is also ideal. But, even for the committed fan, there is much here for you to enjoy. A nicely eclectic track-listing drawn from several points in his career. Half a dozen recordings (Poppin' Popeye, Radar, Vendetta, Dance Contest, Caroline, Hold It ) that are relatively rare, and much less frequently anthologised than his better known material. Finally, and best of all, you get a whopping thirty-eight Link Wray nuggets for less than a fiver.

I could quibble and make a fuss about some of the tracks that might have been included. In particular Fat Back, Mustang, the fabulous Sweeper or the irresistible Turnpike USA. But let's not get too greedy! And please don't be put off by the absence of digital remastering. Link Wray needs digital remastering like a motorbike needs an ash-tray!. Guitar playing as mad, bad and dangerous as this should never be cleaned up or purified. Enjoy it in all its crazed distorted glory here!

Go Rumble!

I like to stick this on and cook. It lasts ages and doesn't get boring so you don't have to constantly change albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Edgy take on 50's teenage culture., 28 Oct 2013

A very satisfying cd. What Link lacked in virtuosity he made up for in sear atmosphere. It is little wonder that so many recent films use his music, as it evokes an edgy, dangerous take on 50's teenage culture. And this compilation is very good value compared with the competition.
