5.0 out of 5 stars THE LEGEND BEGINS (PART 2), 28 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: That's Where I Came In - Standards & Rarities (Audio CD)
2 CD`s, 52 tracks in all, 5 of which can be found on "A Sentimental Date With...". these cover the period 1943 to 1954 and include several songs that other artists had hits with later, ie Dorothy Provine, Connie Francis, Ricky Nelson, Frankie Vaughan and Karl Denver.

Perry, in his usual relaxed style sings effortlessly, with every word audible. There are a few big ballads here as well and he has the power and the vocal range to give them the quality performance they deserve. One overriding factor with all of the songs he sings, is that his voice never changes, it is ageless. The only difference between these and the songs he recorded 30 years later is the backing, which sometimes seems a little dated.

A classy performer in every sense of the word, and from what I read a nice fella too.

This recent Sepia 2 CD set brings to our notice some lesser known recordings from one of the most relaxed of vocal artists. Over the past couple of decades many CDs of Perry Como recordings have been released but these often concentrate on the big hits and not these songs. It is good to have his versions of such songbook classics as What'll I Do; You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby; Here's to My Lady & By the Way. The originals have been efficiently transferred to CD and retain the atmosphere of the originals. Nicely put together booklet and notes. Another first class release from Sepia.

5.0 out of 5 stars A WELL-INTENTIONED COMO ANTHOLOGY, 11 Nov 2013

Perry Como's long career spanned his beginnings as a band singer; proceeding through many decades as a popular solo artiste with RCA Records and top Fifties/early Sixties television star with such exposure enabling him to sell stacks of records. In fact, his popularity meant 147 songs reached the U.S. singles charts including 14 hitting the #1 spot as well as many best-selling albums.

This double-disc anthology of fifty-two songs includes many of Como's non-charting singles and "B" sides from the Forties and Fifties with many appearing on CD for the first time. The majority are slow ballads as a true reflection of those pre-rock `n' roll times when songs were often heartbreakers or truly romantic with MORE THAN YOU KNOW, BODY AND SOUL, CAROLINA MOON and HAUNTED HEART amongst well-known standards. More upbeat oldies MY BLUE HEAVEN, LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME and I FOUND A MILLION DOLLAR BABY are joined by FIRST CLASS PRIVATE MARY BROWN and ONE MORE VOTE as novelty numbers that convey their wartime origins. Accompanied by The Sons of the Pioneers, Perry enters the country and western world for YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT LONESOME IS whilst that bundle of dynamite Betty Hutton joins him for the energetic SHE'S A LADY. Jewish hymns, ELI ELI and KOL NIDREI are out on a limb and I was not too pleased to realise IF YOU WERE THE ONLY GIRL IN THE WORLD and THE BEST THING FOR YOU (WOULD BE ME) have been abridged due to timing constraints but eventually reflected on the fact, both songs are available elsewhere in their entirety.

All choices demonstrate Como's relaxed vocal versatility as well as his unique sincerity and warmth and with excellent remastering, relevant notes, photographs and the all-important recording dates, this compilation will not only appeal to Como fans, but also delight collectors of Forties/Fifties vocal nostalgia.
