5.0 out of 5 stars First class Britten, 26 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Britten Edition - Stage & Screen (Decca box set) (Audio CD)
Decca have decided to issue their recent complete Britten in 4 parts, of which this is one. It's a combination of the great old Decca recordings by Britten himself and/or Pears, along with more modern recordings. All perfomances and recordings are superb; I really can't find much to fault in them. There is a lot of brilliant music in this box. A personal discovery has been Britten's own 1957 perfomance of 'The Prince of the Pagodas' - it's brisk and well-shaped and for the first time I wondered if this might be a great ballet. The box seems well made, and the whole presentation is attractive, with the card sleeves to the discs being printed in various shades of blue and a blue 54-page booklet with good introduction and listings, and synopses where appropriate, plus an alphabetical list of works at the end.
CONTENTS (unless otherwise indicated, these are conducted etc. by Britten):
Discs 1 & 2 - The Beggar's Opera (Stuart Bedford)
3 - Noye's Fludde (Norman Del Mar), The Golden Vanity
4 - Curlew River
5 - The Burning Fiery Furnace
6 - The Prodigal Son
7 - The Little Sweep/Let's make an opera, Children's Crusade
8 & 9 - The Prince of the Pagodas, Plymouth Town (BBC SO, Grant Llewellyn)
10 - Film scores: Night mail, The Tocher, The King's Stamp, Negroes, The Way to the Sea, Men behind the Meters, Coal Face,
When you're feeling like expressing. (Martyn Brabbins)
11 - Love from a Stranger (van Steen), Johnson over Jordan (Stuart Bedford), The Rescue of Penelope (Kent Nagano)
12 - The Company of Heaven (ECO, Philip Brunelle), The Sword in the Stone (Walter Goehr), Russian Funeral & The Eagle has Two Heads fanfare (Philip Jones Brass Ensemble), On the Frontier & This Way to the Tomb incidental music.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent edition for those with an already substantial Britten collection, 29 Oct 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Britten Edition - Stage & Screen (Decca box set) (Audio CD)
An excellent edition for those with an already substantial Britten collection, where the Complete Works would mean unnecessary duplication. A treasure trove of the dramatic works less well known than the operas, either with BB himself conducting, or, in the rarer works, notable devotees. There are no libretti/ lyrics but a substantial essay (and the vocal delivery is nevertheless very clear).
