4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD WITH RESERVATIONS, 25 Jan. 2014

A recording of a show Gary played at the Brighton Dome in 2012 and part of the tour that gives this release its name, this one is not to be missed. Excellent filming, demolishing if only lossy AC3 sound (why not LPCM when there is so much free space on the double layer DVD ?!) and an inspired performance. I don't care for 5.1 mixes but most people do and there is not such option on the disc.

Packaging hits the ball out of the park this time with THE best digipack I've ever seen. It's like a double tray that folds in two so you can slide it inside the amaray-sized outer sleeve, all in rich, glossy cardboard with lavishly layed-out graphics, pics and info.

Even the songs from the Splinter album leap to life and have good sound compared to the studio versions. The only low point to me was ¨Healing¨; totally out of place on an oldies-exclusive setlist, the boring song from a Fenton solo album but hey, the rest of the setlist is to die for, with songs from almost all of the older albums with the exception of -of course- Machine And Soul. I personally would have killed to have at least ONE song from that one but Gaz is ashamed of the album so...

On a special note bassist Tim Muddiman has now mastered his axe and become a mighty force to be reckoned with -he used to play in a very amateurish manner- and the cameras show him a lot. Kudos to him, he even managed to play the intricate basslines on Warriors, not a small feat. Not every guitarrist is a good bassist by default but many are given the bassist position and have to struggle with the 4-chord instrument.

The show runs for a good 100' and its' one of the best I've seen so far, even when the sound on some songs -the older ones with no or little keyboards- have lower volume than the rest and others have so much bottom end I had to turn off the sub and let my capable mains manage the boom. Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

Picture has a low variable ratio often descending into the kerrap zone (under 3.5 Mbs) which is inexcusable nowadays even for a standard def dvd like this one especially when there is more than 1 free GB on the disc. Authoring is very poor, menues are static and the pic exhibits compression artifacts of all kinds like cublocking and a lot of noise, especially on the dark scenes.

Disc 2 is The Pleasure Principle played live yet again but in Oz, taken from a Moshcam internet broadcast. Original quality must have been very low because the pic is similar to that on the Decoder dvd, only a little better with better sound and the songs played note-by-note like on the album, no rush this time as on the TPP dvd, no garagey effect to the sound. Bummer Fenton's keyboard on the right audio channel is totally absent, causing a sound imbalance; not a deal-breaker but annoying anyway. Weird thing is I have captured dozens of internet-broadcast mpg streaming and converted to dvd with my lappy and the result is so much better. Whatever.

Second half of the disc is comprised by songs from the Pure album on, and again the Splinter songs are shone a new light upon. The sound is way better than on the TPP section, with just Fenton in charge of the keys. The show is over the 2 hour mark this time, although it's difficult to tell since both dvds have no TOC to allow the user to monitor the lenght of the show/songs, just the title number, but a computer will tell you.

Had it been better authored it would have been a perfect 5-star rating, but warts and all I enjoyed it to no end. Really worth the 18 quid to me.

To round it all up there is not only the customary interview with Gaz but brief ones with the rest of the band as well ! First time ever; glad to hear and see the musicians speak their minds.
