5.0 out of 5 stars Great unreleased recordings by the master composer and bassist, 28 Jan. 2014

9 discs of previously unheard live recordings by William Parker's groups of the past 15 years, mainly his quartet of Hamid Drake (the best living drummer), Rob Brown (alto sax) and Daniel Carter (trumpet) and a selection of larger ensembles. Never less than gripping and stimulating and often ecstatically enjoyable. This is great music. It is categorised, often, as 'free' jazz but Parker is a composer, a leader of improvisations over a ground of melody and rhythm. And what rhythm. He and Drake are the finest drum and bass section in the world. If you've heard and appreciated Charles Mingus you'll be ready for this. But don't buy it from Amazon, unless you have to. Buy it from the artist himself at a gig, or from one of the few remaining record stores, buy it anywhere but here. Everything Parker does is at the other end of the world from Amazon and its devouring commercial greed.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a long time follower..., 9 April 2014
This review is from: Wood Flute Songs: Anthology / Live 2006-2012 (Audio CD)
...of William Parker's music, and this is as good a buy as you can get, superb music, beautifully recorded, thankfully not a space devouring mega box,but nicely presented all the same.Since the passing of Coltrane we need William Parker and David Ware to keep the flag flying for something just that bit more challenging and inventive than the standard jazz that gets churned out today...we can turn out many highly accomplished musicians, but few innovative ones, these days.
Buy it,whatever type of jazz you dig, expand your horizons a little.

Five stars,

For richness of sound and presence, brilliantly recorded,

For variety in the music, from shronking intensit to quiet lyricism and beautiful melody

For the scale of the thing - I know it will give me many months, perhaps years of exploration and absorption.

For the excellent musicianship on show - a very fine rhythm section, warm and rich brass tones, often played at breakneck speeds.

All good. Why do I have to get in so much detail? It was all good. I don't get it.
