5.0 out of 5 stars BARGAIN!!
The importance of Studio One in the history of reggae cannot be over emphasised, this is a collection of very early recordings from the producer Coxone Dodd, prior to Ska, this is what was recorded in an effort to copy the records you could hear on the radio in Jamaica from the powerful stations from the U.S.A, and what was played on the sound systems of the day.

This triple C.D. contains music of all kinds, soul, boogie woogie,R and B,Rock and Roll etc,but in all that mishmash you can hear the Ska beat trying to come through.
A fascinating collection of recordings, which would cost an absolute fortune to buy on 45's and the quality suggests the audio was taken from original tapes and not copied off records.
A must for fans of Jamaican music, who would like to delve deeper into its roots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shuffling the Blues!, 1 July 2014

For many years the Jamaican R&B of the late 50's/early 60's was a neglected area where reissues were concerned. Fortunately this has all changed in recent years with a steady stream of compilations and this is one of the best! A 3-CD set packed with choice cuts from Coxsone Dodd's Studio One set up from the golden years of shuffle blues. As you listen to these three discs, you will hear echoes of the many facets of American 50's R&B but with a definite Jamaican slant which increases as the music moves towards fully-fledged ska at the dawn of the 60's. With great sound quality, well-informed sleeve notes and a price of under a tenner this is a must-purchase item for Jamaican music lovers or for those who want to bring a little sunshine into their life with some of the most feel-good music ever made!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Birth Of Studio One, 29 Dec. 2013

No single Jamaican music producer has had a more profound influence upon the island's national sound than Clement Seymour `Coxson' Dodd, yet up until now, his earliest work have failed to provide the focus for a single collection.

That glaring oversight is thankfully now addressed with this magnificent 3CD collection, comprising Dodd's biggest hits and rarities of the late fifties and early sixties. Here are the Shuffle Blues, rockers, ballads and proto-Ska singles that established Dodd as one of Jamaica's most powerful music makers and which enabled him to establish his Studio One operation as the coolest of all the island's music brands.

As with all of Secret Records' releases, the sound quality and packaging are both top drawer, with many of the tracks seeing issue for the first time in fifty or so years. So if you're a fan of early Jamaican sounds or simply wish to learn a little about the island's rich musical history, you can certainly do no better than pick up this essential 84 track nugget.
