This was destined to be the only naval battle ever fought between two modern steam driven fleets where aircraft and submarines played no part. For the British their Japanese allies were usually referred to in the British press as "Gallant little Japan" fighting the the "Great Russian Bear".
With their discipline and professionalism the Japanese inflicted a severe defeat on the Russians and many a British pub was named "The Rising Sun" in commemoration.
Despite this crushing victory, with two world wars since, the whole episode has now long been almost forgotten. A review of the various ships involved and the simplistic tactics then required have long needed to be reviewed and an up to date history published. This book goes a long way to filling that gap.
