5.0 out of 5 stars Merchant comedy at it's best. Very Funny Series, 10 Jan 2014
This review is from: Hello Ladies - Season 1 [DVD] [2015] (DVD)
Hello Ladies is a comedy so under-rated by the critics, but in truth it really is a funny series. Stephen Merchant suits the part as the geeky lanky wannabe playboy based in Los Angles, who is desperate to chat up and date way above his league and bank a "glamour model" chick.
If you enjoyed him in EXTRAS, and you like his style of writing (such as The Office) then you'll laugh at this. It's not to be taken too seriously, it's a comedy, and a giggle for each half hour episode with a few LOL moments.
The show is not only a very good comedy show (compared to many tv shows currently around) but it's beautifully filmed in lavish surroundings and the music fits the modern day "man about town, wanna be cool" story lines.
Having watched the entire 1st season, I'm hoping HBO do give this another outing and commission season 2. Enjoyable, laughable with some classic comedy "cliche" moments. The other characters in the show are perfectly cast too. Well done HBO!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Merchant Touch, 16 Dec 2013
This review is from: Hello Ladies - Season 1 [DVD] [2015] (DVD)
Watching Merchant's recent stage show, and this TV Series, you start to realise exactly what Merchant brings to the table with shows such as; `The Office' and `Extras'. Merchant's natural ability to set up a running gag has been somewhat missing from Gervais' `Derek'.

`Hello Ladies' is basically about a British looser called Stuart Pritchard (played by Merchant), an unlucky in love, 30 something, living life in L.A., but when it comes to his desperate attempts to impress the ladies, it seems Stuart is his own worst enemy. Enlisting the help of his best friend; Wade - a fellow 30 something who happens to be going through an emotional separation from his wife - Stuart shows a complete lack of compassion or empathy towards his friend, as he continually forces Wade to go out on the town to "look for love" even though Wade would rather spend most of his time talking about his failed relationship. One of Stuart's main gripes is with Wade's friend; Kives - a wheelchair bound ladies man - who continually upstages Stuart and his desperate attempts to woo the ladies. This ongoing tension and jealousy between Kives and Stuart, allow for plenty of laughter.

Most of the humour, like with previous TV Shows that Merchant has been involved in, is derived from the awkward and difficult situations that Merchant manages to conjure up for his lead character. Humiliation and embarrassment is always just around the corner, and this is one the great things about Merchant's writing ability. He manages to provide warmth and likeability within the lead characters, and although Stuart is an arse, you can't help but feel for him and his tragic attempts at finding love.

A show filled with laughs, interesting characters, and plenty of potential. I really hope for a second season.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece from Stephen Merchant!, 9 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Hello Ladies - Season 1 [DVD] [2015] (DVD)
I hardly ever leave reviews but I just have to leave one for Hello Ladies.
I absolutely adore this show and I am so gutted to hear that HBO have decided to not renew it for a second many people are disappointed.
The main character Stuart (portrayed by Stephen Merchant) may seem like a far fetched walking disaster kind of character but actually he is a character that so many people can identify with (myself included). Stuart shows us the desperate desire we all have to be accepted and he brings to attention the unspoken of but prominent fear we have of how we are seen by other people, Sure Stuart can seem like a cocky sod at times but deep down he is hurting and he is searching, he wants to be accepted and he is someone that we can all see in ourselves which makes you fall in love with this character, I just want to slap him on the back and say "Don't worry mate you're going to be alright" and this is why HBO has to renew this show for a second season because we all want to see Stuart realize that actually he isn't the problem, we want to see him evolve and be happy at the end but we want to see him make an ass of himself along the way!.

Absolutely brilliant show seriously underrated, it's actually the best thing I have seen on TV in a long time and has the potential to be a hit show. I really hope HBO go back on their decision and decide to renew this masterpiece.

Stephen Merchant is brilliant 5 STARS!
