4.0 out of 5 stars Blissed out pop, 24 Feb 2003
This review is from: Quality Street (Audio CD)
The World of Twist were namechecked in a Saint Etienne song on their debut album "Foxbase Alpha" and WOT were a similar sort of outfit, mixing soft dance and guitar pop sensibilities to produce a very English type of music. This is a great summer album, a little cheesy in places but all the better for it, and includes a cover of "She's a Rainbow" and some great tracks.
All round, a lovely and sadly obscure album.

Buy this album. Okay, so it's a flawed masterpiece, with a disappointing production on some of the tracks but this band really meant something. the fact that i'm writing this twelve years on from its release must say something. Quirky, funky, moddish, psyche-pop with a baggy beat? it's all in here and the brass band solo on "the spring" is one of the finest moments on record. the extended version of their cover of the obscure sly stone track "life and death" is indescribable, just beautifully funky. No one has managed to mash together all these sounds and still managed to sound so english. somewhere there is a demo of a second album so buy this and encourage someone to release it. Bring back World Of Twist!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, 7 Jun 2014

I absolutely and completely adore this album. The band managed to create a sound that is unique and timeless, and in the late Tony Ogden had a genuine genius for a frontman.

It is at heart, and unashamedly so, a POP album, but has so many influences it's impossible to list them all.

The fact the band never pushed on from this album is a genuine tragedy, and was due to a number of factors. But in my eyes this is probably my favourite album of my lifetime.

I'm not sure if the album has been re mastered or not, but to my ears it does seem to have gained a fuller sound.

The second disc on this expanded version is excellent, particularly the Blackpool Tower suite which contains the best version of The Storm, and the radio sessions.

Get it!

Lots of liner notes & pics.

Just a shame Gordon King didn't get a chance to do more remixes on the album itself.

I want a Director's Cut.

5.0 out of 5 stars Psychedelia in the 80s, 15 Jun 2011

A Manchester band which came and went. The Stones' cover was produced by Martin Hannett
The best way to buy the World Of Twist though is to avoid the remixes which have now been added with a 2nd CD

Quite simply a forgotten but slightly flawed classic - very upbeat and fun this is what it was like doing poppers, when you were 16...
