I really liked this, even though at times the phrasing left a lot to be desired. This is a detective/mystery series (I hope that's what it will become) with a number of interesting characters, not the least of which is the chief protagonist Numerius Meredius Pulcher; a.k.a Hylas. The first novel in a series is as much about creating an interesting background to the main character as it is about the actual plot. In this case the plot is a good solid murder mystery with a kidnapping in which Cardam drops hints in spades about the past of Numerius, which I'm sure Cardam will hopefully exploit to its full potential in future outings.

As an aside, I bought the paperback, which had it been formatted like a normal paperback would have run to about 2/3rds the number of pages: i.e. It's in a large print with double line spacing, hence why it only took me just under three hours to read in one sitting, it's really an extended short story.

Still, it was an entertaining read that kept me occupied on a longish train journey, and I'm looking forwards to more of the same from this latest addition to the Roman mystery genre.

It was original, well thought out and I will buy the next one. The book could have been more tightly edited but it was entertaining and fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING!, 15 Dec. 2013
This review is from: Numerius Meridius Pulcher and The Case of the Not So Virgin Vestal (Kindle Edition)
An amazing start by this author. Well paced, great knowledge of the era, good solid storyline, with the major protagonist being something of a surprise. Hope there are further books in the pipeline! Well done.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this, Jay Cardam's first novel featuring the eccentric Numerius Meridius Pulcher. I sincerely hope that there are more equally well written follow up novels in the near future. I will certainly be looking out for them.
