4.0 out of 5 stars Good British thriller double bill .
Renown Films in association with Simply Media present this double-bill of black and white British thrillers. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not very impressed.
It's nostalgic to see the country as it was during that period and, of course, black and white suits it very well too.
However I thought these two films were otherwise pretty ordinary.
The actual reproduction was ok so I don't have any issues with that.
Personally, not my best choice, though.

Renown Films in association with Simply Media present this double-bill of black and white British thrillers. Dangerous Cargo (1954)was based on an actual attempted gold bullion heist at London Heathrow airport in 1952.Jack Watling takes the lead as an airport employee menaced by a criminal gang masterminded by Karel Stepanek and his deputy John le Mesurier - giving an effectively oily and odious performance - as the story demands! Good support comes from Susan Stephen,Richard Pearson and Terence Alexander.
In Dead Man's Evidence (1962, the body of a British secret service agent is washed up on the Irish coast. Was he a traitor in the pay of the Russians? Another agent, played by Conrad Phillips is sent to investigate. Director Francis Searle keeps the mystery tight and the story moves at a brisk pace. There is a neat twist to the tale at the end.Supporting actors include Rick Rydon,Veronica Hurst,Bruce Seton and the always watchable Jane Griffiths. Sadly this attractive actress who had burst on to the movie scene in 1956 in The Million Pound Note opposite Gregory Peck, died at the age of 45 in 1975 after making about a dozen films.
Both films are good, undemanding entertainment. Print and sound quality is satisfactory. The DVD is good value for money.

The first film was produced at Nettlefold studios in 1954 and the story moves at quite a pace. Lots of well known faces and what fun it is to spot them all. A good central performance by Jack Watling and look out for glamorous Genine Graham as Terence Alexander's girl friend. The print copy is a little worn but the sound is very clear.
The second film was made in 1962 at Boreham Wood studios with filming in Eire. The film stars that very popular actor of the 1950s and 1960s Conrad Phillips in the role of a baddie not a police inspector. The print is good and clear and again the sound is clear. This double bill makes good viewing and with very different stories is a most welcome addition to the Simply Media 2 Film Collection series. Both films are from Renown. Price-wise a very good deal.

"Dangerous Cargo" is a low-budget, enjoyable but basic British B-class robbery movie with lots of familiar faces in their younger days; don't miss John Le Mesurier's Italian gangster! I more enjoyed "Dead Man's Evidence"; much more pace and somewhat better acted with a few good twists to the plot of this Irish-based Buster Crabbe-inspired tale.
