5.0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed, 8 Dec 2013

This review is from: Bach: Cantatas Volume 55 (Audio CD)
Masaaki Suzuki and Bach Collegium Japan have kept their performances in an outstandingly high level throughout the whole cycle of Bach’s Sacred Cantatas, and the final volume of this series is no exception. From the earliest three cantatas – Suzuki recorded them in chronological order – to this last extant three, you will not find but reasons to praise, and praise is what sacred music is all about – to praise God through art. Since the dimensions of these works, both artistically and religiously, are unsurpassed, I will simply go obvious here, recommending the entire series to those who appreciate art in music, as well as to individuals inclined to glorify God artistically.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious end, indeed, 30 Nov 2013

'Bless the lord and forget not all his benefits' - this is how the chorus of the opening cantata BWV 69 opens this last disc of Suzuki's Bach cantata-series. For many lovers of the series these words surely contain some referrals to Suzuki himself. He himself seems to make his own thanks by closing the disc by the well-known Gloria in excelsis, BWV 191, Bach's separate (and almost identical to its original format)dedication piece from the H-messe to the Elector of Saxony. Yes, this is really a glorious end to the 18 years project. Let us just hope that the unofficial information about the possible re-release of the first 27 or so cantatas in SACD/box format will realize in the near future. And hopefully much more music of Bach from the Bach Collegium Japan! How about more Bach's concertos?

Has it really been 18 years? I have looked forward to every issue, and have never been disappointed. Well done to Masaaki Suzuki and his orchestra, his soloists and his choir.
