4.0 out of 5 stars A Voice to Die For
To match his first two albums, `Water' &' Be Good,' was perhaps asking a bit too much - a bridge too far?
Whilst this is a fine effort, for me, it's very good, rather than outstanding, as the aforementioned two clearly are. This album lacks the vibrancy and perhaps unsurprisingly the originality of those initial albums. There are 14 tracks, of which GP wrote 11. The...

This guy has the most amazing voice and the lyrics of 'water under bridges' - what can I say? they touch a chord. but my favourite track has to be 'Laura'.

The magic in Gregory Porter's voice is once again shown off on this, his latest C.D. The quality of the songs prove to be a vehicle for his incredible talent.

Unlike the previous 3 reviewers, who have all been more than fair and complimentary, I have been lucky enough to have been listening to this album for over 7 weeks now and it is damn near flawless and definitely grows on you with listening. From a personal point of view "When Love Is King" is worth the price of the CD alone and is the stand out track for me. Apart from the fact that he is incapable of singing a duff note and the production captures his voice as if you were listening to him live in a club (the best place to hear him I can assure you). It may well be a tad more populist than his first two 5 star efforts, but it is absolutely essential.

Amazingly smooth and clever.....turn off the lights and enjoy. A truly inspired album that has to be listened to on a quality system to enjoy the depth of the base and highs of the treble...A great album.

Another stunning album from Gregory Porter this third album still has all the ingredients that made Water and Be Good great, and always beautifully recorded.

Gregory Porter's third release, his first on a major label - Blue Note - continues the jazz vocal prowess firmly established in his previous fine work. It is a soulful voice, a baritone-rich and strong assurance that delivers a forceful tone whether in the upbeat gospel of title track 'Liquid Spirit', the jazzy third 'Lonesome Lover' where it rises gloriously over classic walking bass, to what is becoming his signature sentimental balladry of third 'Water Under Bridges', where familiar lyrical metaphors maintain conviction through the beauty - gorgeous really - of the sung storytelling. This is most evident in fourth 'Hey Laura', where the twee honesty of the narrative is simply so, though bolstered again by the wonderful beauty of that voice, dropping as it does to a perfect bass at times ['so late/couldn't wait'] in the opening melody.

Seventh 'Wolfcry' is exquisite - truly so - voice and piano in superb unison, Porter's voice singing the ballad's heartfelt story with such a powerful pace musically, but also in the telling of the tale. The range here is also excellent, those emotive rises and then perfectly pitched bass lines. There is no technical wizardry, but there is technical excellence. Eighth 'Free' is a pacier offering, reminding of the soul sound of Bill Withers and even The Temptations in the story of Daddy and Momma, and his quintet lay down great jazz instrumental credentials: Yosuke Sato and Tivon Pennicott on saxophones; Chip Crawford on piano; Aaron James on bass, and Emanuel Harold on drums.

The two closing tracks are relatively longish, averaging seven minutes each, and whilst one reviewer I have read is cautionary about this, I like the development these provide, especially penultimate 'When Love Was King' where the unravelling narrative is carried by the mounting passion in the singing. Closer 'I Fall In Love Too Easily' is also charged, Crawford's piano dueting with Porter's vocal jazz timings in the most traditional manner. These are classic late-night jazz ballads reminding of other great vocalists wherein Porter is comfortable, impressive company.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shorter Tunes and Less Improvisation., 9 Sep 2013

This is firmly in the mould of Water and Be Good and it sounds very much like those abums - with the same all acoustic, small Jazz group feel.

He is now, appropriately enough on Blue Note - as this is clearly the sound that Gregory Porter loves - all those classic albums on that label, from the period when Jazz was the popular music of the day.

However, this album sees a move away to more and shorter tracks - mostly around 3-4 minutes, with less of the Jazz improvisation and solos we had on the previous two albums. Now, Saxes and Trumpet are relegated to more of a supporting role as horn section, rather than featured soloists, as they were on tracks like "Work Song".

Gregory Porter has been taken up by radio stations like Jazz FM and this material is more radio-friendly, with the vocals clearly to the fore. Of course, he has such an amazing voice that this is all justified - but what made him stand out from the crowd before, was the Jazz musicianship and sophistication.

This is still evident to some extent and Chip Crawford, as main collaborator and pianist is excellent throughout - whether as accompanist or soloist. His playing on the Jazz standard "I Fall in Love too Easily" is the real thing - a wonderful slow ballad that at nearly 8 minutes, stands out as the exception here and an authentic Jazz performance, that would grace any New York Jazz club or classic album.

"Movin'" also has some of the authentic Jazz of previous albums and "Liquid Spirit" is probably the most exciting track with its syncopated Double Bass line driving the band. But most other tracks are kept short with the voice dominating and there is no shortage of tracks that could be played on the radio. In fact this could be easier listening for anybody new to Gregory Porter, than the two previous albums.

The material is again mostly original compositions, with a couple of Jazz standards and the old favourite : "The In Crowd" which has been covered by many people, but here receives a suitably Jazzy treatment. Musicianship is excellent throughout, but I would like to have heard more improvisation and real Jazz - more of a live gig feel. The whole album is cohesive - but the longer tracks have been left to the end - hopefully people will get to these, as for me, this is the most impressive part of the album.

While the whole may not have the impact of the previous two albums, it's still a huge pleasure to have new material from Gregory Porter and further chances to hear that wonderful voice.
