5.0 out of 5 stars A truly inspiring book, 3 Nov 2013
A truly inspiring book. it demonstrates that one can produce great photos and art directly on your smart phone. At first glance the amazingly diverse collection of images from contributors from all over the world looks a little unobtainable but each image comes with a tutorial, 45 in total, that shows the steps and the thought processes behind each one. Instead of buying art for your walls or as gifts you can produce your own images, choose a tutorial follow the steps and soon you will have confidence to branch out and create your own unique images. I highly recommend this book as a resource for artists and photographers and as an introduction to a new hobby.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully presented book - great inspiration, 9 Dec 2013
Rob Lambert (Winchester, UK) - See all my reviews
The Art Of iPhone Photography is a beautifully presented book of photos, hints and tips and techniques on how to take good photos with your iPhone.

Don't worry though, it's not strictly just for iPhone users; there are many techniques, apps and processes that are available Android users also.

Throughout the books the authors, Bob Weil and Nicki Fitz-Gerald, have brought together some of the most compelling images taken from mobile phones where they proceed to explain the techniques, apps and processes behind these images.

Each image chosen is explored in a mini case study complete with example images. There are detailed step by step instructions on how to apply the same process to get a similar result. The instructions are very clear and the technology is explained well. It's a really easy book to read - helped by a great deal of images.

To accompany each case study there are also a few words from the photographer behind the photo. These help to give the book a really natural personal feel. This helps to make the book more readable and the photos more believable - trust me, some of the photos look out of this world and way beyond the means of a mobile phone camera.

The book is brilliantly laid out - it's a beautiful read (I was reading this in PDF version). Lovely clean and clear images and lots of nice separation of content. It's a really nice book to read.

Overall this is a great book to give you inspiration to take more interesting photos. The step by step instructions should mean you can get similar results to the examples.

Good book for those interested in iPhone photography.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating book demonstrating techniques for creating awesome art on your iPhone, 30 Sep 2013
The emphasis on art in the title of this book is not misplaced. Rather than being a standard `how to' of how to use your iPhone to take photographs and how to use one of the myriad of photographic apps to tidy your photographs up, this book is about how to use your iPhone to create not just photography but art. The book demonstrates techniques and possibilities through the eyes and experience of 45 artists or `iPhoneographers'.

The introduction to the book provides a brief history of photography leading to the current domination of the iPhone as an accessible platform for photography and the vibrant iPhone photography community. The artists tutorials is the main meat of the book, and is divided into two sections, with the first section focusing on creation of photography, whilst the much longer second second focusing on illustration and fine art. For each artist there is an example of their work created using the iPhone together with information about what you will learn from that image including artist and image styles and techniques, what apps you will need to reproduce such an image, some background to the artist, the step by step process of creation of the image using the iPhone from selecting, setting up, and framing of the shot, through all the post-processing steps to create the final image together with screen captures illustrating the procedure and settings. For many artists there is also a discussion about their personal favourite app providing an excellent way to get a review about an app and it's use from someone who knows what they are talking about! The two appendices are useful brief reference guides to the 100 or so apps mentioned in the book and the various techniques, filters, and effects discussed in the tutorials.

This is a fascinating and inspiring book which will open your eyes to the amazing possibilities for creating not just great photographs but imaginative and creative art using just your iPhone. You also get a fantastic insight into the minds of the artists including their backgrounds, motivations, and thoughts whilst constructing their images, which for me makes this book even more interesting. Although it is targeted at the iPhone community, the techniques and insights are equally applicable to other phone and digital platforms. If you have an iPhone, like photography and have an interest in creating more arty images, this book is definitely worth a look!
