I vaguely remembered seeing this on BBC1 when it first came out in 1984 (!) and have been looking for it on DVD for ages, so I was happily surprised when season 1 popped up for rental. Shame seasons 2 & 3 remain somewhere in the BBC vaults.... Anyhow Big Deal tells the story of gambler Robbie Box and his many misadventures, the tale being wherever there's a chance to be had - Robbie will gamble with it and, 9 times out of 10, lose. It is a little dated, especially when viewing the cars in the programmes (plenty of British cars - Cortinas, Escorts... those were the days!) and it is quite hard hitting in places, the lead characters are fantastic and the supporting cast a cut above the usual Brit dramas. It does also have a sense of humour, although that can be quite dark in places. All in all a brilliant viewing/nostalgia trip, you don't have to have been there in the first place but it helps if you were. The music is also fantastic - some true 80s gems in there!
