As a great admirer of Ryan Gosling the actor, I picked up this book hoping to find out more about the man behind some of my favourite movies of recent times. However, as is often the case with these unauthorised biographies, this new book, written by Nick Johnstone suffers from the lack of access to the key players in Ryan's life and career, and indeed the man himself.

I would advise against paying the full price because a lot of this information can be easily found on the internet in the usual sources, and I dare say I could have had a fairly good attempt myself at writing the same book. Johnstone is clearly a Ryan fan, but his constant admiring in the text is at times excessive and (in my opinion) quite annoying. We already know that Ryan is a wonderfully versatile actor, one of the best at the moment - but it felt like the author was just trying to fill out the book. This became clear very early on, when it was stated who Ryan shares the same birthday as, and what was happening on the day he was born, it's a pet peeve of mine when authors try to fill up chapters with random, unnecessary facts.

What we have here are the bare bone facts, and a rather detailed overview of Ryan's impressive string of television and film credits, which he has done over a relatively short space of time. Unlike a lot of authors who pen such books, Johnstone doesn't try to dish the dirt of his subject which almost always makes for a trashy and very boring read. As Ryan is a rather private sort of chap, there isn't a great deal that we know about him in the first place, and although this book tries to fill in the gaps, you'll find lots of possibilities and 'maybes', but nothing concrete.

At a cheaper price, I do recommend this book. There is a complete filmography at the end and lots of good photographs. It's reasonably well written, easy to follow and it is quite good to have all of the information already available to the public all in one place. It isn't a personal portrait of this brilliant young actor, but a reasonable overview of his career so far. If you expect to find a wealth of new information and interviews with Ryan and his family, friends and co-stars - forget it.

'Hollywood's Finest' is a good biography for the time being, but I'd personally wait until the price drops, or wait for a better book to come along (I predict there will be many more publications centering around Ryan Gosling in the near future).

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic biography, 9 Oct. 2013
This is an easy read biography about the relatively new actor Ryan Gosling. Filled with good color photos this book gives an idea about the man and the actor. Most of the sources comes from the web or papers and it would gain from interviews or better research. But a good start.
