5.0 out of 5 stars Great non-Grease compilation of classic ONJ tracks
Some will balk at the fact that this is only an 11-track CD, when there are other far more comprehensive and lengthy ONJ compilations available. However, this is actually a great selection of ONJ songs, and for someone who isn't already a fan, it's a terrific introduction to her work, since it neatly mixes highlights of her mid-70s country and adult contemporary heyday...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great non-Grease compilation of classic ONJ tracks, 10 Oct. 2013
This review is from: Icon (Audio CD)
Some will balk at the fact that this is only an 11-track CD, when there are other far more comprehensive and lengthy ONJ compilations available. However, this is actually a great selection of ONJ songs, and for someone who isn't already a fan, it's a terrific introduction to her work, since it neatly mixes highlights of her mid-70s country and adult contemporary heyday with her early 80s pop peak.
It also makes a great change to have tracks like Have You Never Been Mellow, Magic, Make A Move On Me, Heart Attack and Twist of Fate on a current ONJ release available in the UK. Although all massive Top 5 hits in the US (HYNBM and Magic were both No.1) they barely dented the charts here and therefore often get missed off UK releases.
The most noteworthy thing about this CD is the fact that it doesn't include any tracks from Grease. I actually think that's a good thing, since songs like You're The One That I Want, Summer Nights and Hopelessly Devoted To You have become almost ubiquitous in relation to Olivia Newton-John, and they're readily available elsewhere. Although Grease was undoubtedly the key event in her career - still reaping rewards and creating fans for her today - the fact is she was already the biggest-selling female singer of the 70s before Grease came along. It's good to see her non-Grease music given a focus, rather than her film career (although of course we do get songs from her other two major movies from the 1980s - Xanadu and Two of a Kind).
No, it's not a definitive collection, but it's not trying to be. As an 11-track selection of ONJ songs, it's actually pretty great. And at such a cheap price, it would make a good present for anyone who's shown a passing interest in her music and who doesn't know much about her other than that she starred in Grease.
I know quite a few people who saw her in her recent UK tour and who were pleasantly surprised both by what a great singer she (still) is and by what a great selection of songs she sings. I'm sure this would make a good memento for them, or indeed for anyone who appreciates good music from the 70s and 80s.
Hopefully the definitive box set - and/or the much-touted dance/pop album - will come next!

Awesome selection of some of Olivia's mega hits. Of course she had a lot more than this but good selection of country, pop etc. A good introduction to her music if looking to hear some. Amazing to see some artwork and photos that haven't been used before also. Worth it just for the artwork

3.0 out of 5 stars Yet another pointless ONJ compilation album (re-reviewed), 9 Oct. 2013

Icon Ms ONJ Re-Reviewed after Universal Music [UM] in both USA and UK have taken major umbrage at original review posted in the Summer of 2013.

After much reflection in July 2014: Instead of UM just guessing how to sell more CDs with this highly questionable series of CD albums titled "Icon". UM's marketing Dept should instead pursue a sensible policy of relationship building with all the primary fan clubs of these artist/groups signed to UM and enquire from all the various Fan Club Leaders what specific CD album projects should be prioritized during 2014/5 and beyond.

For example:-
(i) Rarities only on vinyl.
(ii) Scarce A/B-sides only on 7"/12"-vinyl, tape, CD-Single.
(iii) Extended versions and remixes only on vinyl.
(iv) CD Boxed sets of "Singles As and Bs" (originally on 7" vinyl, tape, CD single) in USA or UK/Europe or Japan ie on a per territory basis.
NB: See the 1990's "Back to Basics" CD album by ONJ from USA; UK; Japan which varied slightly by territory in terms of actual track listing.
(v) Alternative versions/mixes.
(vi) Unreleased tracks.

It should be pursued to appease the hard core fans rather than chasing after newer younger fans on a budget who can always access key favourite single/album tracks on mp3 file via Itunes/Amazon/other-www-music sellers.

Otherwise this Icon series will be snapped up by hard core fans or completist fans with gusto ever keen to maintain collections in an up to date mode for a very keen budget price of about £3.50 ($5 to $6) per CD.

Ms ONJ has had about 30+ hit singles in the US billboard charts [NB: a similar number in the UK charts] of which the Icon album randomly selects only 10 tracks - 5 from the 70s and 5 from the 80s which play at around 40 minutes out of a possible 80 minutes maximum for a CD.

To avoid disappointment, my best advice is to buy it before it sells out as trying to find hard to trace CD albums that are always eventually deleted is a right pain up the armpit.

In any case at £3.50 per CD it will hardly break your bank account if you go ahead and buy it. IF you lose it in your car stereo then you can always buy another copy.

Anyway it's all "rock n roll", isn't it.? And in any case, rock 'n' rock isn't supposed to be 'high culture' like Mozart, Shakespeare or The Bay City Rollers.!!!!

True, such a small sampling of her numerous hits doesn't begin to scratch the surface of Olivia incredible catalog, but it's a great start for all the new fans just discovering her music, thanks to "Grease." Everyone knows the movie and the songs from it, so no need to include them here. This compilation is worth it for the rare cover photo alone, harkening us back to her heyday, when she mesmerized every guy and was the idol for every girl to emulate. If only woman artists today could stop the antics and concentrate on beautiful music. Olivia is a true ICON, indeed.
