Fine, but not the best AV I've ever used
on 15 August 2015
I have a Windows 8 laptop without a DVD / CD drive, but use a removable USB drive – and couldn’t get the DVD to work at all. I just kept getting ‘could not verify file’ errors. Fortunately, it doesn’t matter – you don’t actually need the DVDs at all. I just downloaded a trial version from the Kaspersky website and put in the product code from the instruction manual.
It installs quickly – actually much quicker than most AV products I’ve used. It’s a 151mb file, but downloaded quickly and the updates are compact (c. 5mb). Running a full scan was quick swift – it reckoned it’d take about an hour, but finished in about 40 minutes, which was good.
This version is good for three devices, including a phone – you download the product using a QR code. It’s protecting my PC, although it hasn’t found any issues yet, so I can’t comment on how it deals with them.
It has the usual array of options, but one thing which bugged me – the default schedule seems not to be to run a scan automatically – I had to schedule it to run weekly. It does come with ‘smart money’ – seemingly a payment protection tool, but there wasn’t any explanation about that. Overall, seems ok, but a few gripes annoyed me.
