Michelle (Kaylee DeFer) was the impaired driver of a car that killed three people. She is at a rehab hospital run by Rachel (Elisabeth Röhm). Michelle wants to move on with her life, while Rachel believes she needs to deal with her issues and purge her sins. Rachel sets Michelle up with a job at the "Darkroom" run by Larry (Christian Campbell) who we later find out is her son. As it turns out Michelle gets imprisoned in a room with a breakable wooden chair, pictures of herself in a bra, and an analog TV with bad home movies. As we all know, psychotic Christians like to use power tools to cleanse people of their sins. Spare the power drill, spoil the child.

The film is light on originality and decent dialog. "Who's a naughty girl?" is a question you ask during a playful spanking, not an amateur appendix operation. Much of the film is told with flashbacks. If you are waiting for "Hostel 4" or "Saw 7" you might want an appetizer.

Parental Guide: F-bomb. No sex. Brief nudity (Kaylee DeFer) Torture.

3.0 out of 5 stars Here we go again................., 7 July 2014
This review is from: Dark House [DVD] (DVD)
SPOILERS......................................................
"The Shining meets The Conjuring"
What an effing cheek, and a barefaced lie at that.
This is a sub par Hostel-wannabe with a plot that is unlikely in the extreme and delivered cack-handedly with lots of flashbacks etc, so annoyingly you have to go and watch the beginning again once you've watched the thing to try and fathom the start.
Kaylee DeFer is pretty good in her role of tortured heroine and the acting is actually good for this sort of thing, but the whole thing's annoyingly derivative. Plot is nicked from the far superior "House of Whipcord".
Don't know about you, but i've seen loads of films like this now.
For goodness sake let's have something new.

PS.... Hands up all those who knew that Christian fundamentalists torture their adversaries with power drills.

I am a lifelong fan of horror and I am always looking for the next "scare the crap out of you" movie, DO NOT believe the hype as this movie is definitely not it.
I have been more scared wondering whether my wheely bin will make it to emptying day on Friday.
Avoid at all costs.

Bad acting, and music that ruins any atmosphere by being too overblown. Comes across like a student film, edited by someone who has watched lots of horror films but learned nothing from the experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crafted depravity - thoroughly enjoyable...., 18 Mar 2014
This review is from: Dark House [DVD] (DVD)
The moment Kaylee DeFer arrives on screen bursting out of her summer dress you just know this is going to be good. Crack the cold beer and buckle up on the sofa, make sure GF is held tight and sit back to watch the inevitable unfold. Crafted work, with cool lighting, some scorching supporting cast moments make for a well-honed piece of horror that stays true to it's genre and lets the drama play out well. Kaylee looks good and delivers well as at first haughty babe-brat reduced to screaming wreck by the end, whilst segueing off into a variety of mind-bending dreams/nightmares without ever once losing her poise. Dressed as a schoolgirl in crisp white blouse I can imagine there's a whole sequel right there. Smart ideas, good camerawork and great atmosphere sets this one firmly in the 'let's lose ourselves on Friday night' territory. Moral of the story - stay out of counseling! Oh, and don't turn up in a flimsy summer dress and expect it to last a horror film intact......
