It's been a long time since their first release and not easy one to follow. Having made one concept album producing another was always going to be a challenge, however Event II is quality from beginning to end. Del's flow is on point and is extremely well complimented by the beats, production and the guest vocals and rappers. Being on old hip hop head I tend to favour the old school style beats and artists but listening to albums like this makes me appreciate that hip hop needs to continue to push the boundaries in order to evolve and attract new people into the scene whilst at the same time giving those loyal to the game something they didn't realise they were missing.

Dan the Automator returns with Del tha funkee homosapien and Kid Koala as Deltron 3030 to take us once again to the distopian future. Opening with a Joseph Gorden Levitt monologue spelling out the scene of tough times that have befallen the future mankind, which sound very much like the tough times that have befallen our current society, Del sweeps in on a rush of cosmic orchestration to reintroduce the hero of our piece. Pay the Price sets the tone, round bass tones and quick cuts from Koala perfectly complimenting Del's laxidaisical yet purposeful lyrical delivery. On it's own merits,if you are a fan, this track alone is worth the price of admission.
What follows is some gorgeous retro futurism, interspersed with some genuinely funny skits concerning life in the future. For an album concerned narratively with the future,it made me think much more of the past than it's predecessor had, bringing to mind No Cause For Alarm era Del, Handsome Boy Modelling School's debut and on more than one occasion 93 'til infinity from Souls of Mischief. Fitting then that Del's fellow Heiroglyphic crew member Casual guests alongside Damon Albarn on one of the album's swooning highlights What is this Loneliness.
In turns this album is melancholic, soulful and funkee(sic), 3030 as an album seemed to be very much forward looking in the soundscape it dealt in, Event 2 is futuristic in narrative content only. But honestly, when Automator's production, Del's delivery and Koala's cuts are timeless what more could a fan ask for?

Great album, not as good as the first but an extension which is what I was hoping for rather than re-inventing or taking a new direction. The only real problem is the actual physical CD. Had this before with amazon orders but the disk only plays without skipping in really good quality CD players so when I try to listen to it in the kitchen for example it skips almost constantly and is un-listenable. I think this is the second or third faulty disk I've had from Amazon.
