At last a release from Sony that really does justice to Perry Como.

The long lost 1975 album "Just Out Of Reach" in its entirety - only 5 of the tracks have been released on various compilations in the UK and Australia. Together with 6 outtakes never before released - AND 5 non-album singles, not released on CD since 1995, and only in the UK - AND the 2 Spanish overdubs never released in the UK.

The sound production is excellent. The photos provided by Tom Wilson are a joy - many never seen before. The liner note by James Ritz is intelligent and informative, particularly concentrating on the recordings with no need for biography details.

In fact it is probably one of the best packaged Como releases for a long, long time.

The six unreleased outtake songs are always unpredictable - why were they not released in the first place, usually because they did not meet the mark. Of the six songs two are exceptional - "Somehow" although only 2 minutes is a quality Como release - and the Bergman and John Mandel song "Take Me Home" again brings the Como interpretation of a lyric to the fore.

Not so for "Yellow Beach Umbrella" - I have been waiting for this to be released for many years - Andy Williams recorded a very fine version of the song. Perry seems to be hesitant and the interpretation is weak - cut off after 2 minutes says it all.

But overall this is a superb release from Sony's Real Gone label - many thanks to all those involved for producing a quality release for both collectors of the Como recordings and for bringing his great voice back to the public.

It seems, like public transport, you wait and wait for Como releases and then along comes two. In November Sepia Records bring out a 2CD of lost Como 78's and 45's - can't wait!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars CLASSY COMO MEETS NASHVILLE'S CHET ATKINS!, 11 Nov 2013

Perry Como's long career encompassed his early years as a band singer with the Freddy Carlone and Ted Weems Orchestras before proceeding through many decades as a popular solo artiste with RCA Records. He was also a successful Forties radio star before morphing into a Fifties/early Sixties television icon and such cross-over exposure enabled him to sell stacks of records. In fact, statistics reveal he achieved 147 US charting singles including 14 that reached the #1 spot along with many best-selling albums.

By all accounts, Como's recording career should have been winding down by the mid-Sixties especially as radically changed pop music was headed by The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys and numerous other groups who wrote their own material with songs and style far removed from the cosy elements of the romantic love songs and simple catchy novelty ditties of previous decades. Fortunately, this was not the case and following the success of IT'S IMPOSSIBLE in 1971, Como was up and running with further hit singles and albums; amongst them this set recorded in Nashville in 1975 as opposed to his usual New York Webster Hall venue. With it's country flavour, relaxed Como was ideally allied to the genre, the Nashville arrangements, backing musicians, album producer : Chet Atkins and the ten featured choices which were covers of hit songs by the then currently fashionable Tony Hatch/Jackie Trent (LET'S DO IT AGAIN), Lennon & McCartney (HERE THERE AND EVERYWHERE), John D. Loudermilk (THEN YOU CAN TELL ME GOODBYE) and Kris Kristofferson (LOVING HER WAS EASIER).

However, this Real Gone Music reissue has gone much further by adding album outtakes from JUST OUT OF REACH and the popular previous 1973-released AND I LOVE YOU SO, with gentle ballads IT WAS SUCH A GOOD DAY, TAKE A LOOK AT ME and TAKE ME HOME amongst the six previously unheard rarities. Five rare singles (including WALK RIGHT BACK and WONDERFUL BABY) recorded during the same period are also a welcome bonus as are the Spanish-language versions of AND I LOVE YOU SO (YO TE QUIERO ASI)and another Como hit I WANT TO GIVE (AHORA QUE SOY LIBRE).

Excellent remastering and fulsome liner notes relating to the sessions/recording dates etc. make this an excellent Como release for his fans as well as those seeking early Seventies recordings that showcase ballads rather than rock.

Perry Como always a most relaxing singer to listen to was still at a peak when these songs were recorded. In fact he was to continue well into the next decade from my recollection. What is a treasure for collectors and those who enjoy a good singer and catchy songs is the range of material on this 23 track Real Gone Music release. I have said it many times over the past few years but once again we never expected to hear these recordings but thanks to Gordon Anderson of Real Gone Music we can. The whole package is quality. Perry Como was still a powerful force and very popular across the world. Excellent liner notes and attractive packaging. The main bonus is excellent sound quality making this "a must have" CD.

Years ago my father had the album Just out of Reach and I found the cross over to country style very easy listening. One song in particular - Loving Her was Easier than Anything - was the one outstanding song that determined me to purchase it and I was not disappointed. It is a lovely album and Perry Como had a lovely smooth voice, one I had not considered for country music before until this album. Very worthwhile owning.

Excellent vocals as usual and well worth buying. Chet Atkins was a top producer and anything he does is usually worth a listen.

This CD consists of `lost` recordings or songs never before released on CD. Whilst the album was recorded in Nashville it truly cannot be classed as a country album, 23 tracks in all. Instead we have a list of songs beautifully interpreted by a master craftsman - Perry Como.

Some of the songs may be familiar by other artists ie. "Then You Can Tell Me Goodbye" (Casinos), "Here, There And Everywhere" (Beatles), "Just Out Of Reach" (Patsy Cline), "Loving Her Was Easier" (Kris Kristofferson), "Walk Right Back" (Everly Brothers) and "Wonderful Baby" (Don MacLean), others including a track written by Des O`Conner, "World Of Dreams", not so. Then you can sing along to 2 songs in Spanish.

The accompaniment could be classed as `pure` country if you substituted the lush strings with a steel guitar and added a banjo here and there, but really there is no need. This is pure laid back music that could have been recorded anywhere, this time it happened to be in Nashville. The Anita Kerr Singers are on hand to lend support, as and when required. A must for anyone who likes a song sung well.

I echo the sentiments expressed in the review above. The mastering is excellent and the bonus material is very welcome indeed.

Let's hope RCA returns to the vaults soon to provide us with some more remastered albums. 'Look To Your heart' in particular is perhaps the most lovingly produced and beautifully performed disc in the entire Como canon: a CD version is long overdue.

Incidentally, well done Matthew Long for the credit as producer!
