The evergreen Stan Tracey has done it again with another superb album. Despite his 86 yers Stan Seems to have lost none of his zest for playing and recording.Accompanied by his tried and trusted trio plus horn men Simon Allen(Alto) and Mark armstrong(Tpt)he has produced an album of highly melodic and swinging jazz.
The tunes are excellent, the ensemble playing excellent and some great soloing, especially from the underrated Allen on alto. This is every bit as good as the "Senior Moment" album and just as enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fitting Swan Song, 26 Jan 2014

As it turned out, this was to be Stan Tracey's last recording as he sadly died in December 2013 aged 86. Since the release of his first album `Showcase' in 1958, he continued to write and record in all formats from solo through to big band. He bought joy to countless jazz fans, and in the last years perhaps finally got the recognition his music has so long deserved.

In this album his usual trio of son Clark on drums and Andy Cleyndert on bass is augmented by Simon Allen on saxophone and Mark Armstrong on flugelhorn and trumpet. The music was inspired by a trip Stan and his family made to the WW1 battlefields of Loos; the individual titles reflecting the quirky humour of the British soldiers at the time.

As with all Tracey compositions, many of the themes stick in your head. This is high quality music, led of course by Stan's instantly recognisable piano style, which just grows on you.

Stan Tracey has been my favourite jazz musician by a mile, since I first heard a track from his landmark recording 'Under Milk Wood' on the BBC radio programme Jazz Record Requests over 45 years ago. It is difficult to believe that the Flying Pig is really the end, but this is a fine musical epitaph to an outstanding musician.

Unreservedly recommended, and if this is your first experience of Stan Tracey I urge you to delve into the large archive of his music which is fortunately currently still available, you won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stan's War Requiem, 24 April 2014

Sooo good! A wonderful parting gift from Stan to jazz fans everywhere. Since his sad departure in December, sad is sadly missed by most jazz fans in the Uk. This album, his last recording is up there amongst his best. He made many "concept" albums over the years, most of the good but the musical connection with the subject matter was often tenuou. However this alum is clearly one from the heart and ranks along side his classic Undermilk Wood. The listener cannot fail to hear the sounds and experiences and even the human of The Tommies in the trenches. you can even feel the humour.
Its a must for Tracey fans but is worth a purchase for anyone with an ear for modern British jazz. He wasn't called the Godfather for nothing.

This kind of music is not my thing, but I bought the CD as a gift and the recipient was thrilled to bits with it. However, there seemed to be some kind of glitch with the despatch, as I received an email from Amazon to say it had not been despatched when it should have been, but it did arrive a couple of days later, so all was well.
