This review is from: Just For You / All Night Music (Audio CD)
These have GOT TO BE two of the hottest, most obscure Old School R&B albums of the early 80's. Although The McCrary's are rooted in Gospel, they did manage (though unsuccessfully) to cross over to straight-up R&B with four albums (two on Portrait/CBS and these two on Capitol). "Just For You" featured a couple of minor singles, "Gotta Be In" and "Any Ol' Sunday," but both failed to generate any significant chart "heat."

The second half of this long sought after twofer is a treasure in spite of its commercial failure and resulted in a U.S. Top Ten (#4) R&B hit with the sultry and breezy second single, "Love On A Summer Night." The first single, "Night Room," was impressive as well with its brassy, thumpin' delivery featuring female lead vocals courtesy of Linda McCrary and a hot bassline. "All Night Music" was produced by Wayne Henderson and has been an all-time favorite of mine since its release in 1982.

Both albums feature a nice mix of beautiful R&B ballads and uptempo and midtempo jams. Especially brilliant are: "It's Still You," "Night Room," "Lookin' Through the Eyes of Love" and "Feel Your Fire." The vocals are on point and there isn't a single throwaway here. They don't make music like this anymore! Note the cover artwork for "All Night Music" with its lazy crescent moon hanging lazily over nocturnal city rooftops. It's like THAT: Music made especially for after hours chilling when the dishes are done, the laundry's folded and put away and the weekend and the wine beckons. The remastering is superb and courtesy of Soulmusic Records, U.K., two once long lost Old School R&B gems have been reissued for the masses of R&B enthuisasts to enjoy after 33 years!

A little trivia too: It was "Any Ol' Sunday" from "Just for You" which was covered by none other than Chaka Khan on her "What'cha Gonna Do For Me" album the same year! If you're hungry for an Old School, Post-Disco R&B experience, put on your dancin' shoes and get down to some "All Night Music!" These two albums are absolute GEMS! :-)
