A welcome combination dedicated to two stalwarts not usually celebrated for their singing prowess.
Rita's vocals for SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, THE KING AND I and her Oscar-winning role in WEST SIDE STORY were dubbed although she had and continues to have her own vocal style. RITA MORENO SINGS (1960) proves this fact with her vibrant vocal clarity somewhat akin to the late Eydie Gorme. COME RAIN OR COME SHINE, BE CAREFUL IT'S MY HEART and BYE BYE BABY are amongst well-known choices with TAKE IT EASY and the Arlen/Capote song I'M GONNA LEAVE OFF WEARING SHOES heading less familiar fare. Leroy Lovett arranged and conducts the orchestra with a bonus selection VIVA LA YOU from the 1956 soundtrack of THE VAGABOND KING (1956) actually featuring Rita's voice.
The Broadway career of Edie Adams (1927-2008) included starring roles in WONDERFUL TOWN and LI'L ABNER with Hollywood beckoning for movies that included THE APARTMENT and LOVER COME BACK augmented by US television but few solo recordings.
SHOW TIME ON BROADWAY (1963) features songs from various Fifties/Sixties shows - HELLO DOLLY! LAZY AFTERNOON, SHOW ME, GOODNIGHT MY SOMEONE and MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY as well as standards from the distant past; amongst them LITTLE GIRL BLUE, I GET A KICK OUT OF YOU and MORE THAN YOU KNOW. Edie proves beyond doubt she had a vibrant vocal talent with backing orchestras helmed by Jack Elliott, Ernie Freeman, Al Pellegrini and Shorty Rogers.
Two rare albums to cherish with the advantage of excellent sound.
