Annie back to form - just hope she releases a new album soon. Best tracks are Invisible and Mixed Emotions

Ok. I'll admit. I'm biased. I love Annie and the fact that she's recorded an EP with Richard X was enough reason to get mega excited. The fact that it leads off with a song co-written by Victoria "Little Boots" Hesketh was almost enough to set me off doing cartwheels in the living room (not a wise thing at my age).

But the thing is, Annie already has one brilliant (Anniemal) and one very, very good (Don't Stop) album to go on and rarely disappoints. The A&R EP is no exception.

The Little Boots co-write Back Together kicks things off and if it ultimately sounds a lot like a Little Boots stomper what's wrong with that? A couple of listens is all it takes for it to lodge itself in your brain.

Hold On is a bit more restrained, but no less exciting and has a melancholic edge that quite a few of Annie's best tracks sneak in without you realising. Ralph Macchio is an amusing 1980's style pop track (I got strains of SAW running through my brain - which might not be coincidental given the reaction from pop fans to the cover art of this EP) which, yes, professes a crush for the star of the Karate Kid.

Invisible is a bit more "contemporary" sounding before closing track Mixed Emotions goes back to the 1980s for a rousing finale.

Of course if the songs look back to a different age of pop production they still very much sound of "today" and are some of the best top tunes you will hear in 2013.

Annie has done it yet again.

It's been a long time coming but Annie's new material is as every bit as good as her previous stuff.

'back together' is probably the standout track on this set.
