3.0 out of 5 stars Damsel in distress in medieval southern Germany
Set in the Bavarian town of Wuerzburg in the middle ages, I was a little disappointed by the fact I could not discover any real land marks, excepy neighbouring towns. It tells quite a good story about a young woman, who finds herself on the run fom the authorities, is deceived in love and mixed up in church business. If this period appeals to you, than you will enjoy it...

A novel with fascinating characters set in a time of great change, violence and wonder the main character Teresa moves through the story and brings to light much that was good and bad. I would recommend this novel to anyone seeking a good read.
Well researched and delivered by a good storyteller

4.0 out of 5 stars Feisty girl and an ascetic priest, 21 Jan 2014

This novel is a translation from the author's native Spanish, but it is very well done and the language flows naturally. Theresa was born in Byzantium and her father taught her to read and write in various languages, all of which she learnt so well that she could follow in her father's footsteps as a scholastic scribe. The priest Alcuin of York had met her father, encouraged him to join him in Germany and they work on a secret document, which becomes the centre of a diplomatic row of historical significance. Theresa's talents cause resentment in her town and this finally leads to a devastating fire, death and mayhem. Theresa runs away, meets and falls in love with her rescuer who is not all he first seems; lodges with a tart with a heart of gold and goes to the abbey to seek help for her injured lover. Thus she becomes embroiled in Alcuin's schemes due to her literary skills, not realising that he had been working with her father. Garrido the author provides a great deal of scene-setting by using Alcuin's ecclesiastical status to explain the historical and political background to the action. At times the reader sympathises with Theresa who clearly loses interest in his monologues! I enjoyed this story as the characters, especially Theresa, are well-drawn and believable; the countryside and living conditions of the people are detailed, describing the appalling weather and the prolonged famine. The importance of the document gradually becomes clear as Alcuin has to investigate the murders and crimes that start piling up. I'd recommend the reader to see the author's notes at the end of the story as the process of creating the novel is also interesting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, 4 Jan 2014

This is a book that at times seems quite complex. However the characters are superbly written and one has an empathy with some of them. However some get their just deserts and the writer is dramatic and expressive. This is a book that will hold the reader to the very end. I will look out for more of this Author.

New to writing reviews for books, this one spurred me into action. Having heard about the original Spanish version I was looking forward to the translation. Not being able to read Spanish I cant compare directly but it definitely appears to have worked on this occasion. Enjoyed and recommend.

An interesting story with two plots running side-by-side - the scribe and his daughter. Some tension and conflicting events. It came to a satisfacory conclusion without it "all ending happily".
