5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome collection, 9 Nov. 2014

This review is from: Collected Stories (Hardcover)
It is not easy to categorize a Bernard MacLaverty story. 'Slices of life', perhaps? Or, as a reviewer recently put it, 'mood pieces'. His characters are ordinary people and, on the surface, nothing much happens to jolt their ordinary lives. Yet the reader enjoys being with them for the duration of the story and, at the story's end, cannot help wondering what will become of them. Ireland has produced many masters of the short story - William Trevor, Edna O'Brien and John McGahern spring to mind - and MacLaverty belongs right up there with them. This is a very welcome volume; it's good to have most of the stories in one collection. Note that I used the word 'most' - there are one of two ommissions from the original, individual collections.

If you haven't discovered Bernard MacLaverty (you'll probably look in vain on the shelves of Waterstone's etc), buy this Kindle edition of his collected stories. Real people, living real, messy, joyful, scary lives, told with humour and humanity and featuring dialogue and situations which actually occur in real life! If you are fed up with reading arty, quirky and obscure short fiction try these and see how it is possible to look through a window at a set of characters going about their daily business and know everything about them in the space of a few thousand words, and yet want to know more.
