Great sound bar for the money
on 11 May 2014
First let's be clear about a few things. If you want stunning surround sound stop reading right now. This bar provides good 2.1 and the 3D effect is ok but not great. The second piece of info is that I bought this not so much to enhance tv sound but to use as a speaker system for radio and CDs.
I live in a very bad reception area so rely on Sky for TV and radio. The problem is I don't like having my 50" plasma on just to listen to the radio. So this unit is ideal with 2 optical inputs and a 3.5mm jack I can connect the Sky box, the DVD player and the PS3. This allows me to listen to the radio without the TV being on or listen to a CD etc. I can also Bluetooth my iPad/ smart phone and there is also a USB port.
The sound quality is much better than my Panasonic Viera TV and the effects are subtle but do make a difference. Bass is reasonable considering the size of the built in sub woofers. Overall I am very pleased with the performance.
A few minor gripes though. Firstly the stickers on the unit, they are a bugger to get off and I'm still struggling to get all the glue off without damaging the finish. LG this is a stupid mistake, static stickers would work just as well. Secondly the volume for different devices is drastic. Sky has to be quite loud but if I switch to the DVD it's way too loud. This may be fixable in the settings but I've not played enough yet.
So in summary, for £95 it's a great piece of kit and I recommend it for entry level audio enhancement. It's very flexible with many connection options and looks very smart sitting under my TV.
UPDATE ON STICKER REMOVAL. Having tried many different options including WD40 and various other cleaners (all tested on a small area first) I finally stumbled upon hair oil. I was looking for baby oil but we had none, hair oil worked eventually. It still took a lot of careful rubbing. The trick is to work from the edge of the glue to the centre in straight lines. Don't use a circular motion, this just spreads the glue residue around. A real pain to do and I will be writing to LG to let them know.
