Nina takes her show to Australia,so no safe home crowd for this DVD! Probably the most recent ventriloquist to have broken into mainstream in recent years, thanks initially to "Monk" the sarcastic, rude primate puppet monkey.Beautiful to look at and very talented, Nina has the audience on side from the off;even bravely putting them down via Monk's deadpan barbs.
She is very witty, clever and hilarious, with a fast comedy mind making fun of audience members' professions and clothing in a flash(via the puppets of course). This is most evident in the human vent section, which is brilliant ad lib comedy and even the spectator involved is crying with laughter, and is hard to believe Nina is providing their voice!
My favourite puppet is Gran,a realistic portrayal of a typical Granny, except this one does mindreading and an hilarious hypnosis act-putting Nina into a trance without "thinking it through".As it slowly dawns on the audience Gran's problem the laughter increases.
Nina has warmth and affection and is hugely likeable,it's hard to believe the puppets aren't real and despite her looks I found it difficult to look away from the characters at her side. One slight niggle is the male puppets all sound very much like Monk and as such its tricky connecting with their character, none of them are unfunny however.
Ventriloquist acts are still in the minority, but Nina Conti should be as big as Jeff Dunham is in USA,she's certainly funnier.
Grab yourself a gottle of geer and settle down for an entertaining DVD.
