5.0 out of 5 stars A dark and beatiful work of genius
I only got this album a week ago, yet i have found myself listening to it non stop since then. This is the first Nick Cave album i have ever bought and i have just fallen in love with it.
On first listen the album seems quite menacing and dark and the more i listened to it the more disturbing i found it. As i listened to Nick Cave's deep and brooding voice...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not his best
This album is an assortment of covers and originals. My understanding is that the tracks were collected over a number of years, and have been gathered together here as an album of murder ballads.
There are some great songs on this album, but there are also weak tracks - O'Malley's Bar goes on for aeons and other tracks like Crow Jane sound like they could have been...

Was really looking forward to listening to Murder Ballads, a Christmas present from my wife. Stagger Lee was the most amazing song Nick and the Bad Seeds performed at Hammersmith in November.
The CD box is Murder Ballads, the CD label is Murder Ballads. the music is ......Yazoo !!!! Possibly 'You and Me Both'

A really surreal album. If u like death and destruction e.t.c get this album the lyrics really tell a story and make u think.(if nt as a murderer) a very good album that u shouldn't miss just because u have never heard of him. The curse of millhaven definately the best trak!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice surprise., 29 May 2002
This review is from: Murder Ballads [VINYL] (Vinyl)
I can't say that I have heard too many songs by Nick Cave before I bought this, as his music has always seemed a little dull. This album was brought to my attention when trying to complete my Kylie Minogue collection, as she features on the track 'Where the Wild Roses Grow'.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that this was not just a deperessing collection of songs about death, but a new twist on the folk-tale genre. The songs range from haunting to serene, and although I'd have to be in a particular mood to listen, it is a great concept, tastefully done.
