Can't quite put my finger on the reason(s) why this music is so appealing ... I guess, like the work of minimalist composers (which it resembles), the changing patterns just seep into your brain. If that makes it sound a bit, ahem, ambient, it isn't really, there are plenty of surprising shifts in key, tempo and tone to keep you on your (mental) toes. It's interesting how different the live orchestrated version (which overlaps rather than reproduces the studio keyboard piece) sounds - more clearly defined in some ways, almost pompous at times, with the 'jazz' aspect more evident. Highly unusual.
