This Wayne Shorter box set is just astonishing value. 12 original vinyl albums across 10 cds. I paid just £14 for the box - that's £1.40 per cd. Blimey etc. etc. etc.

This music is from Wayne's formative years, just before he joined Miles' quintet. It is hard bop, and slightly more accessible than the Miles' albums; and features his stints with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Wynton Kelly and the Young Lions. Most of the Jazz Messengers material is the classic line up also featuring Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons. You'll find exquisite versions of the standards such as This Here, Night At Tunisia, Round Midnight, The Breeze & I and It's Only A Paper Moon; as well as a bunch of Shorter originals peppered across the 10 cds. A great mix of studio albums, and lesser known live recordings. Of particular note is cd10 - Jazz Messengers Live In Lausanne in 1960, includes burning versions of Tunisia & This Here. You can see why Miles recruited Wayne so early in his career. Amazingly, and roughly 60 years on - Wayne is still making meaningful music today.

Just unbelievable value, and a must buy for hard bop fans.

A word of note though - fans of Wayne's fusion years with Weather Report and on CBS should approach with caution - no electric instruments included here.

This is a collection that really is not to be missed. Twelve albums featuring Wayne Shorter in his early years from 1959 & 1960, on eleven of these he shares the front line with Lee Morgan, eight of them are Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers albums all of them classics, and all this for just over a tenner! This is hard bop heaven, every single minute is pure gold.
I realise that this review is perhaps overly gushing but music of this quality at this price should be snapped up immediately to be enjoyed for years to come, so just buy it and enjoy.
