5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book
A lovely book to read which flows and suddenly it has gone. The characters are superb - go on blanket boy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Could have been so much better
A fun idea that disappoints in part through a lack of real depth or engagement with the characters. Some of their brief encounters as they play the matches are engaging though. The author does quite well on the wider subject if life in india, bit grim at times, having visited india a couple of times I can see where he's coming from but also feel he's missed some of the...

Fantastic story of friendship male bonding and cricket. Far from your typical travel book you learn as much about the ways group of men treat each other as you will about India. Highly recommended

I started this book only because I like cricket and come from NZ but mainly because it was free.
What an insight into India, thought provoking and humorous. It is both sad and funny at the same time and they got to play cricket.
It has made me want to visit a country that has never appealed to me..

I didnt think Id enjoy this one as its about a group of New Zealand blokes who decide to travel round India playing " yard cricket " with the locals. As I dont really understand the game I thought it would be hard going but no.. it was a very enjoyable and knowledgable read. They have a few laughs on the way,, taking the mickey out of each other and playing some very strange games in very unusual places.. the rules made up by the local team sometimes and quite a bit of cheating or rule bending goes on ! The matches are abandoned a couple of times.. on one occassion cos the local Police confidscated the bat and ball! It had its sad moment when one of the team has to return to New Zealand due to death in the close family but they carried on and completed the Tour. Sometimes its hard to be the first one to review a book but in this case it was quite easy.. I really enjoyed it.

A fun idea that disappoints in part through a lack of real depth or engagement with the characters. Some of their brief encounters as they play the matches are engaging though. The author does quite well on the wider subject if life in india, bit grim at times, having visited india a couple of times I can see where he's coming from but also feel he's missed some of the beauty and mystery of the place, they seem to stay in rather nice hotels and travel mostly by car, missing much of the country's charms. Good effort but won't be seeking out any more of his books
