5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely love what should have been the album
Absolutely love what should have been the album, one of the best she never did so to speak. A much more broad appeal sound than the usual Stax studio turnout and one which I feel sadly, could have done very well had it been issued as planned. The remainder of the disc is good but is basic Stax Carla.

In 1970 at the American Studios in Memphis Carla Thomas cut this unreleased Stax album. The sublime Memphis horns are largely replaced by strings that veer the sound dangerously close to M-O-R on occasions with less emphasis on Thomas' soul vocals. The first ten cuts are the intended album and there are some vocal goodies particularly on cuts such as 'I love you like I love my heart' and 'Heavy Load' (a cover of a Free song). The much covered Bee Gees song 'To love somebody' also works but alas there are a couple of country song duffers that don't suit Thomas at all namely James Taylor's 'Country Road' and 'Everything Is Beautiful'. The final twelve cuts on this CD are from the mid - late 60s and are a mixture of demos and unreleased material. Most are unremarkable but I did enjoy the lovely harmonies on 'Crying all by myself' and the motown-sounding 'Love sure is hard sometimes' a decent Hayes and Porter song. The song 'Good, good lovin' possesses a strong melody and reminded me of another song so it may be another cover. Essentially this is one for the collectors of femme soul from the late 60s. No way could this be said to represent Thomas' best work but it has its moments and by personal programming I was left with a number that I have enjoyed playing again. As you are supposed to rank music on this site I will give this release a solid three.
