4.0 out of 5 stars Two Excellent Short Stories
Val McDermid has written two short stories that were commissioned and published in a collection, 'Stranded' 2005 and still available. The first is ' Driving A Hard Bargain' involving private eye Kate Brannigan. Gerry Banks is an arrogant, flamboyant egotist. He has been duped into losing his rare car. He is a material man who lives his life without concern for others...

3.0 out of 5 stars A strange one.
This was OK,but not as good as a full length novel by miss Mcdermid, whom I think is a great crime writer.

He is a material man who lives his life without concern for others. There is a neat and appropriate twist at the end.
'The Road and the Miles to Dundee' is better. Morag has gone from humble family beginnings to be successful. Looking back on her life she has been embarrassed and faced with family humiliation. The title is the song of her beloved father. During her life it enforces her ties with her father in remarkable ways.
Short but sweet. Val McDermid's stamp is on these tales.

They said it was short stories - they weren't wrong! Left me wanting more for my money. Less than 10 minutes reading.

I didn't enjoy any of these stories. They weren't typical of Val McDermid to my mind - certainly very different from previous novels of hers that I'd read.
