4.0 out of 5 stars A genius emerges., 18 April 2014
This review is from: Here Is Phineas (Audio CD)
Recorded in 1956 this is one of his first two recording sessions aged 23. I cannot find whether it received critical acclaim upon its release, but it is a fine album from a man who might prove to be one of the greatest jazz pianists ever. He is clearly influenced by Bud Powell, but has also been compared to Art Tatum for his dexterity. There is just one "original" composition among seven other generally well-known tunes. He is mostly accompanied by Oscar Pettiford and Kenny Clarke, but a couple of tracks are solo, and brother Calvin is added on guitar on three.

The variety of tunes chosen show the standard that he has achieved already and the potential within.

An enjoyable album by a genius in the making. His five star recordings are to follow.
