5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Kind Of Dizzy, 9 Sep 2013

This review is from: Smilewound (Audio CD)
'Smilewound' (loving the title!) finds Icelandic ensemble Mum at the very top of
their game on this their sixth album. The innately strange and magical qualities
which have defined much of their best work are gloriously present and correct.

There is an irresistible bustling energy and freshness about these eleven
compositions which makes one feel good about being alive! I defy you not
to get all twitchy and jiggedy-with-it to the fiercely addictive 'When Girls
Collide' and the insanely angular pagan-android-insect-kasbah-dance of 'One
Smile'! Then there's the totally surreal (and wonderful!) collaboration with
Kylie (yup as-in Minogue!) on the final track 'Whistle (with Kylie)'. Sublime!

There are tender moments too. 'Slow Down' is a meltingly beautiful invention
like moonlight glinting on a mountain lake and the haunting 'Time To Scream
and Shout' might well have slipped unseen into our world from another dimension.

'Sweet Impressions', with its faltering rhythms, scintillating vocal harmonies
and squelchy Mariachi brass is, however, my current favorite but there's every
probability that this will change on a daily basis for the next six months or so!

There's so much going on here it made me dizzy and it's a good kind of dizzy!

Quite Extraordinary.

Some great hooks and melodies on this album, you could even describe it as pop. The signature quirky synths and rythmns are still there but the songs seem a lot more polished and melodic, I can see this being their breakthrough mainstream album.

This is Mum's best and most complete album yet! So much going on on each track and they are all so different! Love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another scorcher from Iceland, 8 Oct 2013

Smilewound is a lovely album from start to finish, developing on their previous sounds but sounding more polished. Stand out tracks for me are 'Toothwheels', 'When Girls Collide' and 'The Colourful Stabwound' the later featuring some fantastic drumming. Recommend this album to both Múm fans and anyone who enjoys electronic Icelandic glitch pop.

Múm just keep on delivering sharp, full bodied, sizzling music for those of us who enjoy superior intelligent slices of musical life. By far Múm seem to be able to keep their edge above the other Iceland groups and seem to enjoy a far greater level of variety in their choices of works. Each person within the Múm camp clearly has their place well and truly marked and it's obvious from the levels of skill coming through that they enjoy their work immensely, because I enjoy their work immensely too.
My favourite group by a long, long shot today, they do no wrong in the vast variety of their music.
