4.0 out of 5 stars Good ultra compact pc at an appealing price
I recommended this to a friend who wanted a small form factor pc for basic office/web/email use and wanted to save space and keep the budget fairly modest.
Having had a chance to use the Lenovo Q190 I'm fairly impressed in most respects with the unit.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wifi Woes
Very compact and well designed. General performance was very good, but having upgraded the supplied Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, the wireless driver for the Q190 was incompatible with Win8.1 and the wifi ceased to work. Found a fix for this via an internet forum (i.e. download an earlier driver for the wireless adapter), but Lenovo support was poor in this respect...

(#1 REVIEWER)    (No. 1 Hall OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Lenovo IdeaCentre Q190 Ultra Small Form Factor Desktop PC - (Silver/Black) (Intel Celeron 1017U 1.6GHz Processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, LAN, WLAN, Integrated Graphics, Windows 8) (Personal Computers)
I recommended this to a friend who wanted a small form factor pc for basic office/web/email use and wanted to save space and keep the budget fairly modest.
Having had a chance to use the Lenovo Q190 I'm fairly impressed in most respects with the unit.

One of the problems in the past with SFF (small form factor) pc's is they were underpowered mostly using Atom processors, whilst the CPU inside this one isn't state of the art by any means it does offer better performance and quite satisfactory for non power users.

A quick summary of my good/bad points:

Pros:
+ Very small footprint (192mm height, 155mm width and 22mm depth) that's nice and compact
+ Decent build overall feels solid enough for a compact PC
+ Pretty good price for a SFF pc, 4GB ram and 500GB hard drive should proved adequate for most users
+ Improved performance v previous models esp processor wise, suitable for office, normal use
+ Good connectivity, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi built in, 6-in-1 card reader (SD and MS cards), HDMI out, S/PDIF+Audio In/Out, 2 x USB 3.0, 4 x USB 2.0, 1 x VGA output, wired LAN port, headphone and mic socket. That's most of what you would need included.
+ Lower power consumption/energy efficient
+ You get a wired keyboard and mouse included, they are of acceptable/normal bundle quality
+ On-board graphics are capable of playing back HD media without pressuring the CPU much, this isn't a games pc but you can play some lighter games on it.

Cons:
- It's not loud, but it could be quieter (fan does ramp up a bit in speed under pressure)
- Performance still not quite up to budget desktop levels
- No optical drive

Other notes:
You get a VESA mounting bracket (to attach it to a monitor/tv) in the box
The silver desktop stand is also included (as the photo shows)
The wireless multimedia remote is an optional add on (I have not tested this)
There is an add on optical drive from Lenovo (which fits to the side of this unit perfectly matching it), but you can easily add a USB DVD drive for a modest outlay
The flip open front panel conceals the 2 x USB 3.0 ports and card reader as well as the headphone/mic sockets

Windows 8, we're now on 8.1 which adds boot to desktop and a semi return of the start menu, it's certainly better than the first version, but give yourself some time to get used to it.

CPU performance.
Surprisingly there isn't a huge difference between the Intel Pentium 2127U 1.9GHz, and the Intel Celeron 1017U 1.6GHz.
In passmark (a general benchmark that gives an indication of CPU performance for various day to day/or intensive tasks, higher being faster/better)

The Celeron scored 1595
The Pentium scored 1875

The Pentium is faster, and a step up in performance but not by that much. A typical budget desktop would score in the region of 2000-2200 in passmark. So we're still a bit below desktop speed, more akin to laptop performance in the budget sector (but likely good enough for many users)

The previous best Atom CPU's were scoring around 1100 in passmark at best, so both CPU's offer a decent step up over the older processors. On the other hand if you're running an older single of dual core desktop (4-5 years old or more, something like a 1.8GHz core 2 duo) then this is a half decent step up in performance.

On balance I think the Celeron is the best bang per buck out of the 2, neither CPU is leading edge tech wise but quite adequate for normal users doing some word processing, browsing the web and watching videos. If you are doing more demanding tasks then there are better choices. For the average user it's fast enough.

Considering the good value price, the all in one compact/low energy use, and the intended market (budget pc and for non demanding tasks) The Lenovo is a solid offering and priced quite attractively.

A good buy if you want a small compact pc

Excellent value for money. So small it looks like an external hard drive. Fast processor speed too. I would not change it for any other PC.

Arrived within 24 hours and does exactly what it says on the tine. Can't believe the size which is smaller than the sattv box. Got it to connect the tv to the internet and then found out the tv was internet ready (doh!) but will be keeping it for basic computer usage and back-ups. Love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice and Simple, 10 Feb 2014

This review is from: Lenovo IdeaCentre Q190 Ultra Small Form Factor Desktop PC - (Silver/Black) (Intel Celeron 1017U 1.6GHz Processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, LAN, WLAN, Integrated Graphics, Windows 8) (Personal Computers)
I was looking for a basic medium [mediocre] performance PC to act as a management hub for my entertainment sources of video and music which are stored on ext. HDDs. I tried Android options but found them too limiting but had no wish to assign a full blown PC to this task. I came across the range of bare bones PCs and finally opted for the Lenovo IdeaCentre. Very pleased with it - it is on the home network so I can stream music and audio to virtually any device in the house, in addition to playing videos and music via the HDMI output onto the TV. Also it does scheduled backups and works well with a simple wireless k'bd/mouse combo from Logitech. Plenty of USB ports, esp. if you add some powered USB bridges...

All in all - ticks every box on my list!

I love the computer but I HATE Win 8.
Why have Amazon stopped selling this model?

The PC on it's own is a absolute fantastic product. The only thing that can subtract from the experience is the horrible windows 8 that comes on it. Buy without or remove and put windows 7 instead.
