This Is .... Not Half Bad Actually
on 10 November 2013
After what seems like an interminable wait Icona Pop's debut album
finally tilts its shiny fusilage over the horizon of the listening world.
Swedish duo Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt have been tinkering about
in the wings for a couple of years; an appealing collaboration with
Chiddy Bang, 'Mind Your Manners' in 2011 and a cracking single/EP
'Nights Like This', also 2011, were both promising propositions.
'This Is....Icona Pop' is a collection of eleven tracks which, although
unrelentingly formulaic in nature (big beats, brash synth arrangements
and the simplest-of-simple unison vocals and harmonies) nonetheless possess
a certain addictive charm which lend themselves to revelry and wild dancing.
You will already doubtless be familiar with the singles 'I Love It' (one
of Summer 2013's unavoidable earworms), 'All Night', 'We Got The World'
and (for my money their finest moment) the blissfully daft 'Girlfriend'.
What's left in the mix is largely more of the same (not that I was hoping
for anything else!) with the exception of the rather lovely 'Just Another
Night' which offers a little respite from the full-on aural assault with some
welcome light and shade and a well-sung appealing melody, despite having
been constructed by a veritable minibus-load of writers and co-writers.
Mindless fun doesn't really get much better than this.
