4.0 out of 5 stars A first rate history of a first rate division!
This in a nutshell is a very affordable, first rate history of first rate division written by a first rate author with actual wartime battlefield experience and therefore I am sure it will appeal to a wide range of readers, especially those with an interest in this particular division and the men who served in it .

Monty once described the 51st Highland...

3.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive history but heavy on acronyms
Seems like full accounts of all the major actions of the period but slightly let down by the heavy use of acronyms with no explanation. OK if you know all the terminology.

Has lots of logistical movements which do not add much to the narrative.

Been on 2 battlefield tours taking in the ground fought over by the mighty 51st. This book brought back the memories and was a gem, wish I had it with me when on the tours as it really described the ground and could be put into context when actually in the areas the division was on. Great read for any military enthusiast.

A very detailed account of the achievements and losses of Monty's Highlanders. Can be recommended for all who are interested in the war. I was stationed in Tripoli for National Service and went on 'Schemes' in my Land Rover across country to Benghazi and back along the coast road. Through 'Marble Arch'.

well written interesting account of the highland regiments actions under Monty. tragic that so many men lost their lives for being a premier regiment. and a shame that various goverments have disbanded the pride and traditions of so many. Well done the Jocks

Awesome historical effort this! Disappointed to find no photographs to match the dozens captioned throughout the book. Thank goodness the Allies were blessed with the support of these formidable fighting regiments.

This book tells it as it was, none of the rose tinted heroism of fiction. Should be read by all politicians contemplating sending our troops to war.
