4.0 out of 5 stars An account of one of the most audacious raids from WW2.
After the Bismarck was sunk in May 1941, the Tirpitz posed the greatest threat to Allied shipping in the Atlantic by any surface vessel. In order to become that threat, however, like the Bismarck, first she had to get there. Both sides were aware of how the Bismarck's attempt had been a close run thing. Had her steering gear not been jammed by a fortunate torpedo strike...

3.0 out of 5 stars Complex true war tale
A somewhat long winded story of an extremely brave set of servicemen who showed bravery and courage above and beyond. A complex tale but nevertheless gripping account in all the terrifying aspects of fighting.

Utterly remarkable person. Clearly written without being sentimental. Violette deserved the George Medal and her daughter must be so very proud of her and what she did in the name of freedom and Liberty

A most interesting account which delves into the detail and personal experiences of the participants of CHARIOT. Moving along at a ferocious pace the reader is amazed that any of the invaders survived against superior defences provided by the architecture of the area and the numbers of defenders available to the enemy. A truly remarkable story.

3.0 out of 5 stars A detailed record of an astonishing action by incredibly brave combatants, 7 Sep 2013

Very detailed. In fact I suspect too detailed for many readers. The author has done his research very thoroughly. I got lost in trying to follow the detailed movements of all the combatants so eventually started skipping sections. Can't say I enjoyed reading it, but it reminded me of the debt we owe to all those who gave their lives to protect our freedom. God forbid that we should ever have to face the same again. But sadly mankind never seems to learn from the past.

Not at all clear -- admittedly a deeply chaotic operation and perhaps not helped by reading it on Kindle and unable to enlarge maps !

I think it lacked detail about the men involved in the operation

An almost incredible catalogue of bravery - almost incredible, but it actually happened! I bought the Kindle version and the pictures emphasise the bravery and doggedness of the teams. A must read.
