3.0 out of 5 stars an entertaining and factual read
This book was is some ways gripping, charting as it did the life of a man who was at the forefront of flying in its early days. The content and chronology are superb although the style of writing is a little stilted. Chappell reports factually without the 'asides' which would have added to the interest and readability of the story. I found the book difficult to put...

The book is a very comprehensive narrative of a remarkable pilot and leader of RAF bomber crews operating aircraft which were known to have a high attrition rate. A good source of historical data for students of this genre.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good read, but slow start., 2 Sep 2013

This review is from: Bomber Commander: Don Saville DSO, DFC - 'The Mad Australian: Don Saville DSO, DFC - "The Mad Australian" (Kindle Edition)
Overall this is worth a read, but it is very third person for the first 40% of the book (understandably as it's put together from Saville's logbooks). However, it does read very much as if you are reading his logbook, with little meat to fill in the detail at times.

There is no doubt that Saville was an excellent aviator, but this book was a little too much like a list of facts and for me personally, needed more personal aspects. It does get better when it gets to the point in his life where the author met him.

Worth a read, but a little limited in my opinion.

I did not know of this great pilot until I read this book. I found the writing style a bit turgid but behind that this story deserves to be read. This was an extraordinary generation and the exploits of men like Don Saville are both inspirational and humbling.

2.0 out of 5 stars Australian Flying Ace's career set out in detail, 14 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Bomber Commander: Don Saville DSO, DFC - 'The Mad Australian: Don Saville DSO, DFC - "The Mad Australian" (Kindle Edition)
The book is written in reverse style, i.e-it begins with the tragic end and then goes back to the start. This would be acceptable if the style was interesting but I personally found it to be as exciting as reading a bus timetable.

Didn't bother finishing it as it was so boring.

The start of the book spends a lot of time talking about his parents and very little about him, got fed up and stopped reading it.
