4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read
This book gives an interesting insight of the lives of people frequenting the workhouse. One part in particular where the writer spends a night 'under cover' is particularly illuminating, not just in terms of the experience of spending a night in the workhouse, but also regarding the characters that could be found there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Harrowing stories
It was a true history of the suffering of people in the workhouse, written by people who had experienced it. How could the great and the good think this was a reasonable way to treat people.

Interesting to learn of the horrors of the poor during the Victorian times. Would possibly have enjoyed it more had it followed the whole story of one or two subjects.

There for the grace of god . A very sad but too true a position of many poor souls in Victorian England at the time , apart from the Victorian style language very interesting to read although very sad.

I didn't expect this to be a book to be enjoyed. I found the various stories to be not only disturbing, I could live with that, but very repetitious and therefore boring. Maybe I should not be writing this review as I did not actually finish the book, which is unusual for me.

Sometimes this book actually upset me, it says a lot about the way it has been written and researched that it actually gave me an emotional response.

Love reading the history of these brutal homes. They should never have existed. Feel sorry for who ever stayed in them

My maternal grandfather and all his 7 siblings were born and lived in a workhouse in Kent. He was apprenticed to a barber in a Wesh mining village and became a Master Barber, lasted 10 years before dying under a bayonet at Cambrai. I'm in touch with several of his family and they all survived and prospered in their own way. His Mother and Father and Grandparents all died over a year or so so the Parish took them on. My grandfather had a job as a caretaker in a School for Young Ladies when he was 12 and that led to an adventurous few years until the 1914-1918 War led to his early death.
I can just remember the old Workhouses and Poorhouses in Scotland and feel fortunate not to have any first hand experience of the conditions in these places.
