Superior Military Sci-Fi
on 21 June 2013
This is the concluding book in a series of four from Evan Currie based around a small backwater world called Hayden. I downloaded the first in the series last year on a whim without any great expectation. Well, I devoured that book and quickly bought the other two published. What started off as a fantastic military space adventure simply got better at each new instalment.
Then I had to wait six months for this one. And it is a worthy rounding off of what I suspect will be the first chapter in this universe. It's brilliantly done. Seriously, it is without a shadow of a doubt the best hard military sci-fi series that I've read and I have read a few, including all of the major authors in this field.
The most important thing about Evan Currie is that he can write. Unfortunately this genre is littered with utter tosh written by people with way more enthusiasm than talent and literary ability. Evan Currie has it in spades. He can write gripping page turning books that are grammatically correct and both informative and accessible. Not many people can do that.
It's also true that the story is king. There are some authors who try to stay as true as it can be to physical reality as far as we know with painstaking - and often boring - detail, Currie balances this with the need to keep the story moving at a good lick. It makes for great reading because characters develop along with the many threaded story avoiding getting bogged down with minutiae that in the end adds little. He also has written a decent grown up story. There is some swearing - not much - to add a degree of authenticity to what in the end is a group of military people along with the reality that sometimes people might have relationships. He doesn't however belabour it to make a point which some writers seem to feel the need to do (stand up Richard Morgan) but makes sure it's there to ensure you know you are reading a grown up book.
There is action aplenty and whilst the up front thread is conflict with an alien alliance, there is a back-story of a very advanced race which is clearly running it's own game.
Simply put this series is a brilliant, top class set of books that is genre leading. If you like this sort of thing then I assure anyone that they should buy all four books right now.
