5.0 out of 5 stars It really is Flamin' Groovy!, 7 Aug 2013

This review is from: It's Flamin Groovy (Audio CD)
In an age when mainstream rock and roll has been reduced down to an anodyne and homogenised blend of `radio friendly' pap and lacklustre dirges it's nice to come across an album that combines both a bit of old fashioned verve and some unabashed fun.

Chris and his cohorts have summoned up the best of the ancient music deities [Stones, Byrds, Zeppelin, Beatles etc], stirred in an ample pinch of their own personalities and cooked up an album that's by turn tuneful, rocking, uplifting and plain old dirty. Once upon a time these 12 tracks would have been lauded by a wider audience - today it's just the cognoscenti, which is a shame as this CD is as good as any `name' release of the past 6 months.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sublime Power Pop, 28 July 2013
This review is from: It's Flamin Groovy (Audio CD)
I bought this at the Flamin Groovies Scala show. Thankfully for everyone else it's now on general release. It's one of those albums that is just long enough to make you want to listen to the whole thing again straight away. If you're looking to learn what perfectly crafted music is about then buy this album. Once done buy the whole Groovies back catalogue.

5.0 out of 5 stars The fire still burns, 17 Oct 2013
This review is from: It's Flamin Groovy (Audio CD)
It's not been a bad year for Chris Wilson of The Flamin Groovies.
It's creeping up on the band being together for fifty years, and instead of considering being put out to some surreal rock and roll pasture for retired proto punks, he has instead managed to fit in a tour of sold out dates, opened for Springsteen, and even slipped in a solo album that is on par with anything 'the groovies' have done.
If he has a bucket list at hand I doubt there's much left for him to score off.
On 'It's Flamin' Groovy!' he starts off strong by immediately picking up the gauntlet and reassuring fans that there's still plenty in the tank to power this engine.
The intervening years since the last studio outing from Chris effortlessly slip away as one power pop classic eases into a stonesy country rocker and then back again.
It's very easy to realize why he has drawn the legendary tag to himself in certain circles when you listen to this release as there's not one song that was birthed for this album that could be considered a black sheep.
The twelve tracks simply ooze class.
