True this isn't an all out martial arts action flick. What it is, is a very good story which throws in some fantastic fighting elements. The bulk of the film surrounds a detective who is determined to uncover donnie yens true identity and dark past. The villains in this film are truly ruthless as a bad guy should be and the fight sequences are fantastic. I'd recommend this to any eastern cinema/martial arts lover. The only Redfin it doesn't get 5 stars is because yet again, the story and hence the movies run time, has been cut for western audiences, (because apparently we have the attention span if a fish. Casing point, the other review!!). If you want the full uncut version you'll have to track down "Wu Xia". This is the HK or eastern release and us fully uncut at around 20 mins longer.

Peter Chan and Donnie Yen have stunned me. Wu Xia is a dark Chinese retelling of A History of Violence under the guise of a Kung Fu Movie. Great kung-fu too, it may take its time to arrive, but when it does, it does it with style. I thought I'd seen everything in Martial Arts cinema, but to see a mature, dark, traditional genre piece executed with class is everything the jaded fan needs, even if they never knew it.

That's how I felt when I watched the uncut 2 hour long Chinese version of the film, anyway.

Unfortunately, this is a cut version of that film that turns an amazing 2 hour long modern classic (and one of the Donnie Yen's career highs) into a film some 30 minutes shorter. I don't care who you are or what the film is, you cannot delete thirty minutes from proceedings and have the same thing at the end.

OK, first ask yourself what do you want from a martial arts film? Firstly, i'd say this is a film that just happens to include fighting. The reviews give you an idea of what you get here. Indeed, this film isn't a series of fight sequences interspersed with an attempt to tie them together with dodgy acting on a budget. I enjoyed the fight sequences, i enjoyed the acting and the plot, and they spent some cash on it, so it looks nice. Good interplay between the two leads, some twists, it keeps you engaged. Yes you have to read the subtitles, to be honest i'd rather that than listen to a westernised dub. Not quite up with Ip Man (imo this is better than Ip Man 2), i'm going to look out for the uncut version 'Wu Xia', not sure why they trimmed 20mins from this 94min version, unless they felt there was too much acting!! I take the point made about packaging, i've bought films based on the cover, but then they are designed to sell films!
Extras - you get some insight to the film with a 10min or so Donnie Yen interview.........Legend of the Fist up next.
