Annoying cut of a modern classic
on 10 November 2013
Peter Chan and Donnie Yen have stunned me. Wu Xia is a dark Chinese retelling of A History of Violence under the guise of a Kung Fu Movie. Great kung-fu too, it may take its time to arrive, but when it does, it does it with style. I thought I'd seen everything in Martial Arts cinema, but to see a mature, dark, traditional genre piece executed with class is everything the jaded fan needs, even if they never knew it.
That's how I felt when I watched the uncut 2 hour long Chinese version of the film, anyway.
Unfortunately, this is a cut version of that film that turns an amazing 2 hour long modern classic (and one of the Donnie Yen's career highs) into a film some 30 minutes shorter. I don't care who you are or what the film is, you cannot delete thirty minutes from proceedings and have the same thing at the end.
