This review is from: Jean Philippe Rameau: Dardanus (Audio CD)
Vow, this must have been a really memorable night for all those who managed to attend the concert in February 2012 (at the l'Opéra Royal du Château de Versailles). Hauntingly beautiful and dramatic arias one after another sung and played like it was the last night. Having listened to the album only once one feels that Dardanus beats other (and maybe better known) Rameau's operas like Hippolyte et Aricie (listen to the marvelous Christie/Erato). Anyway Pygmalios' Dardanus is better recorded than Minkowski's (1760 version) other ways very good version. The booklet does not clearly inform about the changes to the 1760 version (I suspect it is an enlarged version from the earlier ones; but need to check this). What is clear anyway is that the vocalists and the ensemble are first rate, and the live atmosphere is transmitted surprisingly well to the master (I listened to the 96k/24bit FLAC master stream). This makes one also wait for more from Ensemble Pygmalion. Vive Rameau!
